More About the Author

African travel specialist Philip Briggs has been exploring the highways, byways and backwaters of the world's most challenging and exciting continent since 1986, when he spent several months backpacking on a shoestring from Nairobi to Cape Town. In 1991, he wrote the Bradt Guide to South Africa, the first such guidebook to be published internationally after the release of Nelson Mandela.

Over the rest of the 1990s, Philip wrote a series of pioneering Bradt Guides to destinations that were then - and in some cases still are - otherwise practically uncharted by the travel publishing industry. These included the first dedicated guidebooks to Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, Ghana and Rwanda (co-authored with Janice Booth), all of which are now in their 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th edition.

Philip has visited more than two dozen African countries, and written about most of them, whether it be for guidebook publishers such as AA, APA-Insight, Berlitz, Camerapix, Dorling Kindersley, Frommers, Struik-New Holland and 30 Degrees South, or for specialist travel and wildlife magazines including Africa Birds & Birding, Africa Geographic, BBC Wildlife, Travel Africa and Wanderlust.

He still spends at least four months on the road every year, and spends his rest of the time battering away at a keyboard in the sleepy dorp of Bergville, in the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg region of South Africa. He is married to the travel photographer Ariadne Van Zandbergen and lives with three dogs and a cat. When not obssessing over some or other aspect of African history, culture, wildlife or travel, Philip's interests include music, reading and walking.

Review

"If seeing gorillas in the mist appeals, this is the book for you. Primarily concerned with wildlife viewing opportunitites, it gives formidable in-depth information on native mammals and birds." The Times "We had a successful filming trip, and the guide was great. I found it full of useful information, it was relevant, up to date and comprehensive. A good reference for anyone visiting Uganda with loads of interesting background information and tips." Emma Richards, Smith & Watson Productions, UK "The most comprehensive and best current guide." 5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable if travelling to Uganda 7 Nov 2003
Format:Paperback
I went to Uganda October/November 2003 and found this guide to be completely up to date. I was armed with both the Bradt Guide and Lonely Planet East Africa Guide and there is really no comparison - the Bradt edition is a real must for anyone going to Uganda - be it for a back packer or safari traveller. The information about wildlife, travel, roads and particularly accommodation, be it camp sites or luxury lodges is spot on and completely accurate. The Lonely Planet Guide is too sparse in the particular information about Uganda as it covers other countries in East Africa, whilst the Bradt Guide is Uganda specific. There is no real alternative guide available for anyone travelling to this wonderful country - buy it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well done Briggs (again) 7 Nov 2003
Format:Paperback
Another excellent Bradt guide to Uganda. I live in Uganda, working mostly with the national parks, and can vouch that the travel information is very accurate and very up to date. This book has new stuff for everyone, residents and tourists alike. It is the one I send my visitors up country with. Briggs has found a host of places I never knew existed and his 'grey boxes' scattered throughout the book describe a wide variety of fascinating background info which is new to me. Buy it and come and visit Uganda!

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable 1 Dec 2005
By L Fray
Format:Paperback
The Bradt Guide to Uganda is a mine of useful and interesting information about the country. I used it throughout my recent trip to Uganda. Other guides may include more photographs, but Bradt is the best for detail, accuracy and interest. The publisher also operates a free email update service.

5.0 out of 5 stars You won't do better 31 Mar 2007
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If you are interested in visiting Uganda, this is THE guide; up-to-date, accurate and very easy to read. It is more than a guide book in that it can be browsed for pleasure in its own right. I like to think that I know the country reasonably well, but this book is full of fascinating information and each edition that comes out tells you something new.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brillaint 15 May 2009
Format:Paperback
From the other reviews i see i am not the only one who found the Bradt guide unbelievably helpful and far better than the lonely planet version. The key is in the details and that is this guide all over.
Like many African countries people know very little about Uganda, but when you read a book such as this put together by genuine experts you realise just quite what is there. Thanks Bradt for turning my 'great' trip into quite frankly an eye-opening trip of a lifetime.

We have made a self-drive camping holidays to Uganda and Rwanda earlier this year, and used this Bradt Uganda guidebook to plan and conduct our itinerary. By writing this guidebook, Philip Briggs has shown again that Bradt guides are among the best guidebooks to cover the African continent.
Philip writes knowledgeable and with enthousiasm even on small community based tourism activities.
Apart from the guidebook, we have found Philip's website where he archives updates and feedback from travellers very useful.
Very recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent Travel Guide 13 Jan 2008
By D. Muir
Format:Paperback
The Bradt Travel Guides are always useful. However, the Guide to Uganda (5th Edition) has proved to be very reliable.
Bradt can be relied on to keep there travel guides up-to-date but I also receive the interim e-mail updates and these are well worth reading. Subscription is simple, just send an e-mail to the author (Philip Briggs) or keep an eye on the website.
