Good and Bad 13 Oct 2011

The authors say this book is for those who know a bit about Ubuntu - it is not a total beginners book - but it goes on to show you how to burn CD's etc but does not show you how to partition your hard drive when first installing Ubuntu! It says so much and yet misses so much. The order of the book seems logical at first, from installing Ubuntu to updating it and configuring it but it then leaves the bit about securing your machine and tuning it right towards the end of the book. So it may be worth skipping to these chapters after you have gone through the first few chapters.

Other annoying things are that it talks about software such as Nmap but that's it - it would be good to have had a few command lines for Nmap. However, at the end of each chapter there is a Reference Section and this is very, very good. It is well worth visiting many of the sites shown in the Reference Section.

There is a very large section on programming languages e.g. Pearl/Pyhton/PHP etc - I do not see the point of this because if people where interested in the programming side they would go and buy a proper in-depth programming book?

If you are a beginner you will benefit from this book and learn more as you revisit the chapters. I even suppose the programming sections give you a taster as well. Overall, it's worth having if you are new to Ubuntu but I am not sure if its worth buying if you are more "intermediate" as there seems to be too many basic things in it.

I use Ubuntu 11.04 and found this book has some good information. It contains about 70% of information that is or maybe useful to me and 30% I will never use. This is a book to dip into when you need to solve a specific issue. It also contains some padding and information that is freely available on the Ubuntu Forums. The free disc it comes with is Ubuntu 10 and so out of date. There is a free update disc available BUT only if you live in the USA,

There are not too many Ubuntu 11.04 books out there at the moment so you are somewhat limited on choice.

this book reveals more than just what ubuntu is all about, there is good in depth coverage of a multitude of topics, covering all the in and outs of a linux based os, setting up a server/client function, scriping with pearl, php etc., use it as reference for whatever you need to know as a novice with the linux systems. Backup your system (just in case) drop the dvd in the tray, reboot and an hour later (more or less) you are up and running ubunto, mind you it helps spending a little time with the book before you set of on your journey. have fun.
