4.0 out of 5 stars a good family game, 16 Aug 2005

Alhambra is a fum game that all the family can play. Unlike Monopoly (which takes for ever) it can be a quick game, it generally takes half an hour. However similar to memory games (where we parents have no chance of winning) the rules are simple to understand. We started playing with our 8 year old, who very quickly understood the basics.
The aim is to build your own Alhambra using very simple rules of construction. Strategy & luck are both required.
The different currencies give a holiday feel to the game. History & architechture are also a subject for discussion while playing.
Can be played by 2 players which is also useful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not as good as Settlers, 26 Nov 2007

Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
Palaces of the Alhambra is a good strategy, tile laying game. It is similar to Carcassonne , however not as complex (which is both good and bad). It can also be played by 2 people (with modified rules).

Basically, players have to build their palace, and the better the palace, the more points you get. There is variety in the gameplay as every game will be different due to the changing costs of palace components, and variability in tiles and currency you draw.

The one (main drawback) that this game lacks is that there is little player interactivity e.g. trading which makes other similar games much better.

I'd still rate Settlers of Catan as the best strategy, interactive, tile laying game but Settlers takes longer and is more complex. Alhambra is no longer available from many games stores so grab it while you can

4.0 out of 5 stars Tactics, tactics, and more tactics, 7 Nov 2008
By Sonia (Delft, the Netherlands) - See all my reviews
Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars
A very interesting board game in which the player's tactics, rather than luck, are crucial. The goal is for each player to build their own Alhambra by building different types of adjacent buildings.
Each player receives money cards to pay for the buildings. On the center of the table four buildings are put up for sale, each in a different currency. In one turn a player can choose to either take money cards or buy a building. A player can only buy a building if they have at least the amount of money that the building is worth in the currency that is required. If the player buys a building with the exact amount that it's worth he or she gets another turn. After a player is done the empty spots on the center are refilled until there are again 4 buildings to choose from for the next player in line.
The player that has the most buildings of one type receives the most points for that type. Players also get extra points for the number of adjacent outer walls, making the game more interesting.
The art of the game is in building the more buildings of each types than your opponent and receiving the greatest amount of points for that type of building. The more expensive the type the more points you get.

The rules are slightly different for 2 players as a fictitious player has to be introduced, and that makes it slightly less fun than with 3 or 4 people. A game takes a little less than an hour to complete so you won't get fed up before the game is over, and the rules are easy to learn. Good fun!
