Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Remembering a bunch of passwords can be quite a pain, considering the amount of e-mail accounts, Bank accounts, social networking sites, and forums that one participates in every day. You can't just leave them on a text file on your Windows Desktop, making it privy to all and sundry and neither can you write it down in a small piece of paper lest it gets lost. What are you supposed to do then, considering all those above mentioned user accounts are mission critical? The answer lies in the Eikon Digital Privacy Manager.

The Eikon Digital Privacy Manager provides a fingerprint authentication security solution thanks to the Eikon USB peripheral fingerprint reader coupled with the Protector Suite QL software. This solution enables you to retrofit this biometric authentication system onto an existing computer, greatly simplifying the different aspects of PC usage at the swipe of a finger.

No longer do you need to cram your brain with a whole bunch of passwords when your humble fingerprint is enough to do the job. In fact, sensitive files can be encrypted and launched in different applications as long as you assign specific fingers for each one. The Eikon Digital Privacy Manager is compatible with Firefox, Windows Vista, and now Mac. Don't worry about having your fingerprint replicated - the fingerprint reader stores only mathematical data based on the uniqueness of a fingerprint, in shorts, a template that cannot be reverse engineered to reproduce the fingerprint image. The Eikon fingerprint reader won the prestigious Consumer Electronics Association (CES) Best of Innovations Award in 2007.

I had a laptop with a Upek reader built in - my new one doesn't, and I missed the simple swipe to open the locked machine, so I bought the Eikon. UPEK INC. TCRD4CA1HOK3 Eikon Digital Privacy Manager USB
It's even better than the built-in version. I installed the drivers from the UPEK site, plugged in the device, which prompted Windows update to add something I may have missed (USB support? I can't remember) and then I used the CD to install the reader application - Protector Suite. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, and all installations went without a hitch.
I then swiped my fingers. All ten registered first time, every time, and not a single one has missed yet in the dozens of times I've unlocked my laptop.
I spotted that there was an upgrade to Protector Suite 2011. Within 24 hours Upek Support answered my email with two links (registration of product code and download link) and that installation went smoothly as well.
The device has a very long cable, probably 1.5 metres, and has a base of something like rubber which is rock-solid on a smooth surface and doesn't budge when swiped.
As far as I'm concerned it's an A1 product, hardware and software.

Are you secure? 30 Aug 2011

This is possibily the best biometric security device that I have used.

It was very easy to install on Windows 7 64 bit system.

There are options to store the biometric and passwords on either your computer or the device itself.

Delivery was fast and within the time indicated. Packaging was protective and strong.

If only this device would reliably recognise fingerprints first time, every time it would be great.

I bought this for my elderly mother as she currently writes down her passwords to avoid forgetting them. I thought it would increase her security and prove easy to use for her. Perhaps it would - but although she could "enrol" her fingerprints easily (i.e. train the device to recognise them), in practical use her fingerprint was recognised only once in more than 100 attempts. She does have some calluses from housework, but really - this is mediocre.

However I was sufficiently impressed with the device not to send it back - I decided to use it myself. I get a much better success rate (as a much less "horny-handed" person) but still it usually takes two or three swipes to get my fingerprint recognised.

This device could be great if only the implementation were better....
