5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful deck! 23 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I've been playing with these for a while now; how nice to get back to basics!

I find it's too easy to become confused with the more modern decks and their interpretations - with this set, the cards are as about as basic as you can get; they go back to the time when the tarot were simply playing cards.

The booklet suggests easy and effective divination techniques that a beginner can understand and build on as they become more familiar with the cards. The pip's are based on the classical suit's as relating to the four elements and numerology; which are a basic's for any new Occult student. No confusing pictures of people with swords in their backs or children playing happily with their parents tho'....

I know some people don't like the look of this deck but I do - I find it very pleasing compared with some of the more photographic quality modern decks.

It's said that every tarot reader should create their own deck and I agree - but for the beginner, as I've stated, it can be confusing gathering the knowledge needed to do this; I suggest you base that knowledge on these cards, as they're a good basis with simple uncomplicated images.

Highly recommended and not just for beginners either :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Superb 17 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a really beautiful set of full size cards that have a nice tradional look and feel to them. The book that comes with the cards is "interesting" offering some different perceptions on tarot cards, but I didn't find it very useful - It is quite a boring read. The cards though, are very good and they would be five stars if they were just slightly less antiqued. This is a small contrivance which detracts from the beauty of the set. Overall, if your looking for an unfussy traditional deck then this is it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Coloured Backgrounds 9 Oct 2012
By lsur
This probably seemed like a good idea by the designer but I found the backgound colours (pastel grey, rose, yellow and green) detracted from the brighter, primary colours of the images themselves. There seemed to be no system involved of colour symbolism, according to element for example, nor any especial suitability of the colours chosen contrasted to the original tones. A white background as in most packs, I now realise, does enhance the straighforward pictures which characterise thispack. Matters aren't helped by the choice of a cruder version of the pack, even by Marseilles standards. It's all a matter of taste but personally I found the background in this version not to add anything.

Please note thoguh, there is another Marseilles Tarot by Fournier which also has coloured backgrounds. I have not seen this pack other than online images. It looks to have clearer and more attractive colours and images than this reviewed pack.
