Product Description

Product Description

Felt making is the magical transformation of a loose pile of wool fibres into a durable, alluring non woven fabric. An ancient process that continues to work its wonder on modern artisans and crafters, felt making produces a flannel-like fabric with a tactile appeal like nothing else. How is this fabric alchemy accomplished? The felt maker adds a little soap and water to the wool, presses the fibres until they tangle together and hold the shape of cloth, and then vigorously works, or fulls, the cloth until it shrinks and strengthens to the desired shape. In "Uniquely Felt", Christine White, a professional teacher and felt maker, gathers her considerable knowledge of the craft to write the comprehensive guide to all things felt. She describes the equipment, explores concepts and theories of felting, and thoroughly covers all felting techniques, including traditional, needle, three dimensional seamless, nuno, cobweb, carved, and Beede ball. And then there are the projects - handsome, indestructible bags; nuno shawls that marry soft wool fibres and wispy silks; bright picnic blankets and plush bath mats; lacy curtains made with impossibly sheer cobweb felt. Every project is striking in its fabulous depth of colour and purity of form. There are no stitches, no seams, and no signs of woven cloth - just a wonderful, flowing piece of textile art. The basic steps of felt making are simple enough to learn in an afternoon, but the infinite possibilities in every new pile of fibre keep enthusiasts fascinated for a lifetime. The process always begins the same way, but the fibres make the felting journey unique every time. This book is the ultimate guide to that magical adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars A modern up to date felting guide - a must for every felter, 12 Feb 2008
A wonderful book both for the beginner & the more experienced felt maker. It explains all the different techniques in full as well as step by step instructions for creating numerous interesting items. Christine White is obviously a very experienced tutor & there hasn't been such a comprehensive guide to felting for nearly 10 years. As an experienced felt maker I found a number of her tips and observations about different wools & fibres interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book, 28 Aug 2008
I've been making felt for a couple of years, but I've learnt a lot from this one - I understand now *why* I'm doing certain things, and I'm making much better felt as a result. Very clear directions, and hints and tips which I haven't seen anywhere else (and I have most of the other felting books).
The picture on the cover isn't very interesting, but don't let that put you off.

3.0 out of 5 stars Technically good but ..., 9 Dec 2008

(REAL NAME)
I agree with other reviewers that there is a lot of good information in this book about making good quality felt of different types. I've been making felt for several years and learned quite a lot. But there is nothing here about good design! Most of the projects seem to me to be of very basic, even crude, design in terms of colour, texture, composition (where relevant) etc. So you need to look elsewhere for creative inspiration or ideas about how felt can be used in a fine art rather than craft context.
