Product Description

Product Description

The UK Trailwalker's Handbook is a directory of long-distance paths (LDPs) in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland compiled by the Long Distance Walkers' Association (LDWA), covering 730 national trails, long-distance paths and anytime challenges, with regional overview maps and an index of walking guide publishers and support companies. The UK has a network of long-distance trails unrivalled anywhere in the world, currently covering 60,000 miles of footpath and growing steadily. Millions of people walk along them every year - some walking a complete route, some just walking a stretch on holiday, at weekends or even as part of their daily commute. Combining exercise, challenge and exploration with minimal impact on the environment, little cost and a real benefit to local communities, trailwalking is hard to beat. But where are all these trails and what are they like? How do you find one that suits you and matches your timescale? What maps, guidebooks or websites do you need and where can you find them? Does anyone run a ?sherpa' service? These questions and many more are answered by this eighth edition of The UK Trailwalker's Handbook giving you all the information you need to select the best route.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Guide of Long Distance Paths, 22 Jun 2011
By
C. Colley (Lincs) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The UK Trailwalker's Handbook: Editet by The Long Distance Walkers Association (Paperback)
I discovered this directory of walks whilst browsing on the Long Distance Walkers Association(LDWA) website. Since buying it, I have found it very useful. Published by Cicerone Press who publish the very best of walking guides, this book is good quality and clearly presented.
After the introduction, there is a section on the National Trails of Britain, followed by an alphabetical directory of about 720 main trails and some shorter ones. The trails in England are listed under the correct region and each one listed includes the name, a brief outline and distance of the walk, a waymark sign(if any), trail attributes and any useful websites and OS maps to use. On some of the walks listed, the picture shown is not always a waymark sign, it's often a picture of an award badge, so the info must be read to avoid confusion. Most walks listed have additional and very useful information on where to buy the full guide or leaflet to complete the walk. This book is a directory and DOES NOT include a full guide for each walk.
So far, I've only really concentrated on the East Central England section and discovered plenty of walks for the future. I've ordered several guides to complete the walks and know this book will be very useful when deciding where to take a walking holiday. I'm really pleased with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference source for walkers', 2 Dec 2009
By
This review is from: The UK Trailwalker's Handbook: Editet by The Long Distance Walkers Association (Paperback)
A welcome update of this excellent publication. The handbook provides an invaluable overview and reference source for walkers. The footpath network and themed trails are national treasures worthy of celebration. By implication the introduction draws attention on the need for statutory and other bodies to work together to support, improve, and promote trails to the public. The straightforward ratioanale is that this is a good value way to improve health, to encourage recreation and the pleasure of walking.

1.0 out of 5 stars A bit mis-leading, 9 Jun 2011
By
This review is from: The UK Trailwalker's Handbook: Editet by The Long Distance Walkers Association (Paperback)
If you are looking for a particular less well known LDP then this book may very well feature a paragraph on it, but then you can probably find out just as much about your LDP on-line and save yourself the money. I used Amazon's book preview to find the walk I was after in the index and it was there - and points to two paragraphs on two pages which I only discovered once the book was in my hands!

This is fairly bad! I bought this book with one purpose in mind and it has point blank failed to satisfy that purpose. Don't buy it - use Google instead!
