The CD features many artists whose names will for UK soul and R&B collectors, at least be indelibly associated with the familiar yellow and red imprint. It also features many extremely obscure acts whose repertoire took an extra amount of tracking down, and who rub shoulders nicely alongside the more familiar names on board.
The featured repertoire ranges from Chicago R&B to Big City Soul, from stomping rockers to the deepest Southern Soul from the Stax studios all totally reflective of the catholic tastes and A&R policy of the late, great Guy S. Around a third of the tracks have never been reissued on CD or LP!
Meticulously mastered from the best available sources, and lovingly annotated by UK R&B journalist and UK Sue obsessive Mike Atherton, this is as compelling a collection of truly great 60s soul and R&B as youll find anywhere.

All killer, no filler,

The question this time was, would Ace maintain the standard of volumes one to three, their previous, and originally planned to be, only, volumes in this series. Well the answer has to be yes. Again there are tracks here to die for. Even tracks which were flips of earlier inclusions turn out to be of a very high standard.
A good example of the latter is "Steal your heart away" from Bobby Parker. The A side was "Watch Your Step" , a simply stunning number, but "Steal your heart" almost matches it for slow intense modern blues. Carlos Santana is reported to have said about Bobby that "he's one of the few remaining guitarists on the planet who can piece your heart and soothe your soul". Jimmy Page was another fan. Another example is "Good Time Tonight" from the Soul Sisters. I'm not sure if this was the flip of "Can't Stand it" - I was so impressed with the ladies I bought the album - but again it's pretty good in its own right. Other tracks include some which I'm surprised didn't make it onto the very first album in the series. Ike and Tina`s "A fool in love" is one of the early classics and was their first ever hit. It reached no. 2 on the US R&B charts and 27 on the pop charts. This was well before their "second coming" with Phil Spector's" "River Deep". Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I put a spell on you" simply stands alone" - don't bother listening to the many cover versions. And if you don't already have the New Orleans classic, "Rocking Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flue" from Huey Piano Smith and the Clowns, well, now's your chance to get it. Add in another decent Inez and Charlie Foxx track, Jimmy Reed's typical slurring blues, "Odds and Ends", a soul standard in "I stand accused" from Jerry Butler, another good outing for Jimmy McGriff and his organ, another Elmore James, another Baby Washington. A few nice instrumentals as well. I could go on but suffice to say that this is yet another very good set and more plaudits to Ace. It's all too easy to forget that many of these tracks were rarities and some remain so to date. And as has been pointed out by other reviewers, what about all the other tracks that, presumably Sue, or is it Ace, are sitting on. Can't we have these as well? I appreciate that there were no plans for volume 5 but then I'm assuming that there weren't any for volume 4 ......

More Sue reissues please!,

I agree wholeheartedly with David Booker's review except for his statement regarding 'Watch your Step', which was in fact released on Volume One of the series. There are indeed many gems which could be part of this hopefully ongoing series, such as all of the 'We Sing The Blues' (ILP 921) album, a true classic which I play to this day, having purchased it about forty years ago.
Also well worth reissue with its original track sequence is the 'This Is Sue!' album, which like 'We Sing The Blues' has several classic tracks which remain hard to find. Then there's Elmore James' 'Happy Home' and his later (1963) version of 'It Hurts Me Too' (in mono please), Freddy King's 'Hideaway', Willie Mabon's 'Got To Have Some', 'Why Did It Happen To Me?' and 'Just Got Some', part 2 of 'You Can't Sit Down'..... This is truly great music. Keep it coming please!
