Being relatively new at the diving scene (50+ dives), both my wife and I were looking to test British diving at first hand. We bought the book, primarily because we are fans of Mr Sheir's magazine articles, most of which have been covering the same topic. My wife is a little nervous of deeper recreational diving so this book seemed perfect!
We have not been disappointed. Each site has a short history of the area and how the wrecks came to be, a description of how to get there, what to look out for when on the dive and special instructions that the author thought relevant for each site - what more could the diver need in a guide!! We especially like the little maps which in our experience are accurate and very helpful. The author has obviously done his homework in preparation for the book and we like his personal reviews of each site which are a continuation of his excellent magazine articles.
I am not sure that the previous reviewer read the product description before buying the book, as I thought it quite obvious that the book covers coastal and offshore dives. Along with the comments about Stoney Cove above, Dosthill is also a quarry dive that goes down to 24m, so I don't think that qualifies, either, as an above 18m dive site. Although he feels there are only 2 sites in Northern England, when you consider all the Welsh, Scottish and Irish sites included, there is quite a spread throughout the UK. Of course not all parts of the coastline will be suitable dive sites either. It is a little farfetched to expect ALL the UK dive sites, coastal and inland, within one book. Perhaps the rest will be in a second book!!
I would happily recommend this book to anyone with the dive bug and wants to try the brilliant coastal diving that the UK can offer. This book covers it all.
