This was the first series of Ultimate Fighter I watched & was the perfect choice to get started. TUF is similar to boxing show The Contender - 2 teams of amateur mixed martial artists live in the same house & fight each other for a shot at a UFC contract. Normally it's an All-American event but this time, Michael Bisping who put us on the MMA map in
TUF Series 3 has put together a UK team to take on the yanks!
I won't say what the final results were but the British boys really do us proud - in & out of the ring. The first episode features all the UK qualifying bouts in the Wolfs Lair (Bisping's gym), in which the UK lads show they're really up for it & want to make the most of this opportunity. But in the US heats in the second episode, a couple of guys are overweight & one even collapses during a 'we're gonna whip the UK's butts' speech. As such, alternates have to be brought in, including Junie Browning's equally psychotic brother (Junie Browning being the total nutter who attacked other competitors in the house in
TUF Series 8).
The footage inside the house is very funny & really highlights the differences between the two countries. The Americans can't understand what the scousers & geordies are saying & are more interested in playing practical jokes like a bunch of jocks out of
Saved By The Bell than they are in fighting. Meanwhile, the Brits constantly take the mick out of the Americans for being cheesy, such as putting all their hands together & shouting 'USA!' - 'you look gay!' is the British response! It's also funny to watch the UFC founder Dana White trying to be objective when he obviously wants the USA to win - whenever he thinks a USA fighter will win a match he says so, whenever he thinks a UK boy will come out on top, he says 'it's gonna be close' or 'it could go either way'! It's also great to see the rivalry between coaches Bisping & Dan Henderson, who knew during this series that they were scheduled to fight each other in
UFC 100... So in a way, it's almost like a soap opera for lads!
The finals take place in a UFC event, which is included in full. It's great to watch, with back-to-back fights - things have certainly come on since the last UFC video I got, which was UFC 3 or 4 & had a bloke who was in
Austin Powers walking into the ring with a cross on his back, like something out of the WWF! But in a way it was slightly anti-climatic because it didn't have the pre- & post-match footage of the fighters & the finals just became a few more scraps in a bigger event. They weren't even the main fight. But this is still a great DVD, with plenty of great fights, lots of insight into what the guys are like out of the ring & heaps of bonus footage. Great stuff!
