Product Description

Product Description

The Bard's Tale is an action/role-playing game in which the player takes on the role of the Bard - a sardonic and opportunistic musician and adventurer, driven by carnal rather than noble pursuits. The Bard is not interested in saving the world, his humble motivations are strictly "coin and cleavage."

A truly non-linear game, the player chooses the Bard's responses towards other characters he encounters with either 'snarky' or 'nice' dialogue. Each choice changes the course of events in the game. The action takes place in medieval times in a land based on the Orkney Islands off the coast of Scotland - the inspiration for many of the classic fantasy stories.

The Bard's Tale 10 April 2005
By Drayax
The Bards Tale is, quite simply, an excellent game. If you like RPG adventures like Baldurs gate: Dark Alliance or Champions of Norrath, you wil love this.
The Bards Tale is a Fantasy RPG that doesnt take itself too seriously. You play The Bard, an excellently concieved anti-hero, who's only intrests are, indeed, coin and cleavage. He has been roped into a quest to rescue a Princess from a tale (what would seem a rather cliqued storyline but has a brilliant twist), with the reward of a good shag and her money. This game has it all, with an edge of comedy and even the few songs (my favourite being one about the creator of beer) that you can even sing along too...if you so choose.
The Bard travels on his quest with his companions, familiars which he can conjur using his lute, and throughout the game you can find new tunes to summon more powerful creatures.
The combat system is well made and is much the same as Dark Alliance apart from the blocking...you have to time it to block individual blows which can become quite impossible in the flurry of battle. You have the choice of dual wield (using a dirk and a sword), bows, two handed weapons, flails or a sword and shield and you can gain various other skills by leveling up in the game.
The graphics are good, much the same as Chapioms of Norrath, and the dialouge is simply the best i have heard in a game, with brilliant witty humour from the Bard who is cockier than Han Solo, and a cynical narrator who loves to insult the Bard...all of which leads to some priceless conversations and truly memorable characters. You have either the choice to act nicely towards people or to act for your own gain, and your choices make various consequences in the game. Because of this The Brds Tale has a good replayability and multiple endings.
The Bards Tale is an instant classic, and already one of my most favourite of the RPG genre. Absolutly unmissable.

Fun:
Firstly, this game is a hell of a lot of fun. It's a different take on the whole RPG stories, so that rather than being a hero destined to save the world (tm) your in it for the money and the girls- as a result it is fun and innovative to play.

The songs are good and the concept of using songs to raise helpers is an interesting one.

HOWEVER- the control system is difficult, especially in combat, even more so as it doesn't pause during the process of summoning creatures, which takes quite a while meaning you can easily (and frustratingly) get killed while you are resummoning your helpers.

The difficulty curve is slightly odd, with it being quite easy to begin with but rapidly becoming too difficult and the save points are far too sparse.

However these are minor annoyances within the game itself, which is an enjoyable and relatively intelligent piece of entertainment.

Need a sequel! 20 Mar 2006
I’m not the most skilled gamer, but I found this game easy enough to enjoy it but not get overly frustrated when I hit harder sections. Camera angle is a bit suspect though.

It did only take 20 hours or so to complete it, and though the ending is good, you definitely get the “oh, is that it?” kind of feeling.

Still, I found the game very entertaining, and wish it was popular enough at its original release that the makers of this game would consider creating a sequel, but I won’t be holding my breath.
