Manufacturer's Description

Coming exclusively to the Nintendo 3DS, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell 3D is the highly anticipated hand held game in the multimillion-selling Splinter Cell series that redefined the stealth/action genre and is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed franchises of all time.

In Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3D, Sam Fisher is sent behind enemy lines in the Korean Peninsula to prevent WWIII, by investigating the responsible party that sunk the USS Clarence E Walsh, U.S.’s most advanced cruiser. Through his investigation, Sam learns that the key parties who are planning to use the Masse Kernels and launch WWIII are war comrade Douglas Shetland, Displace International, and Admiral Otomo, the Third Echelon Information Self Defense Force (I-SDF) contact. His goal will be to infiltrate their lines and expose their deeds before they manage to launch a new and deadly worldwide conflict.

The cutting edge hardware of the new Nintendo 3DS allows Splinter Cell fans and all stealth/action addicts to experience an immersive 3D adventure, interacting with the game like never before.

Fun:
After a few mediocre reviews, I was rather apprehensive towards getting this game - big mistake. In spite of being a port, I found the game to be enjoyable, funny, tense and immersive. The characters are fun, the settings are realistic (as is the action).

Obviously, sneak mechanics is what this game is all about. The light and sound indicator are your life blood, as one mistake means a firefight, which rarely goes well with more than about two opponents. Yet the sneak mechanics is not ridiculous - armed guards act like you would expect under most circumstance, and with some clever moving about you can avoid confrontation most of the time.

I find that there is always an alternative route when you are faced with a seemingly insurmountable object like a door with an alarm, so exploring around can be rewarding and fun. Many obstacles have multiple resolutions to them, yet the game stays focussed enough to be fun at all times.

Biggest downside is the lack of support of the circle pad pro (the game precedes the peripheral). The button controls does a poor job, especially in firefights. The frame rate, I found, is also not always up to scratch, this probably being a result of the game being a port rather than a dedicated development.

From a commuter point of view, there is frequent save slots available, and the cut scenes are not overly long, so a definite good portable experience overall.

Fun:
First thing I noticed about SC 3DS is that this is actually the same game as Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory on the original Xbox. Which I loved as I'm a Splinter Cell Fan and have played them all quite a few times. I think it's great to see Splinter Cell on the hand held and is much better than Splinter Cell on the PSP.
I preferred to play this game in 2D as I had issues with the darkness of the game so had to tilt the screen to get to see in dark areas. I know people are moaning about the darkness but remember this is Splinter Cell, you spend most of the time in your night vision goggles as you are always shooting out lights etc. to stay unseen. The 3D effect was decent, not great, I only used on the title screens, loading screens and cut scenes. But remember this is a new console and as time goes by the games will get better, stronger and the 3D will be great.
I had no problems with the camera or controls. Yes it's best to use your thumbs instead of your pen as it is much quicker to do this.
All in all I thought it was a good game, graphics good, kinda late PS2 graphics when it was at it's peak. Which is good as the old DS graphics were terrible at best. I wouldn't pay more than £[] for this brand new, I'd rather rent it which I did.
Good game, good fun, have a go if you are a Splinter Cell fan.

Definitely maybe. 26 Mar 2011
Fun:
Just got this my 3DS - loving it so far BUT...
-it's dark as hell. You cannot play this in moderate sunlight.
-the controls are really annoying at first - once you get them, they're fine though (tip - use your thumbs!)
-it's not a portable game - though that isn't so bad as you can close the lid anyway.
-graphics - bit muddy. 3D works, although it is dodgy here and there - for instance, a computer screen up close has ghosty outlines at highest 3D (but you can tun it down, so...)

Haven't played the 2005 one, so can't really compare it to the original. Still, pretty fun despite the minor flaws - I'm loving it for what it is. If you've got the money spare, why not?
