Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Word junkies beware--Ubi Soft's latest version of Scrabble will have you tongue-tied and sitting at your computer for hours on end as you battle your spelling wits against others or the computer.

The Scrabble board is simple and clear--the options that are available to you are all there at the click of the mouse. This is a comprehensive version of Scrabble and no option is left unturned.

But it is not just scrabble that this game offers and Ubi Soft has done well to expand the game further by adding five other gaming modes including duplicate mode, conundrum, and anagram. Also included is a game for the hardened Scrabble fan, where you have a certain number of rounds to achieve a certain number of points from a game that is half way through.

In comparison to your first person shooters or real time strategy games, the graphics of this delightful title may seem slightly simple--they are however very polished, presenting you with a menu system and game play that are both easily understandable.

Unlike the Sierra card and board gaming titles that see you pit yourself against the likes of aliens and cowboys, this scrabble is firmly suited to the more serious player. This is shown with the accompanying classical soundtrack it gets you straight into the mood for that word showdown with friends and family. --Jason Denwood

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst Software Ever Bought, 18 Mar 2003
This review is from: Scrabble 2003 Edition (Video Game)
I have an older Hasbro version of the game which my wife and I have used for many happy hours. I decided to buy the 2003 version, thinking I would get an improved product to run on our new system with Windows XP. In fact everything about the game is worse. The user interface is so sluggish, the board is poor (no labels to show you which squares are double score etc), and there is much less useful infomation - eg it doesn't show what your current word would score as you build it up. I can't get my money back, but I can at least warn other people not to waste theirs on this dreadful software. I have now re-installed the old version and will continue to use it, in spite of a few minor windows compatibility problems.

1.0 out of 5 stars A very poor implementation of a classic game., 10 Aug 2004
This review is from: Scrabble 2003 Edition (Video Game)
One word- UNuseable.
The gui has many "enhancements" that slow down play, and irritate the player enormously.
I bought this for my wife as a christmas present, only to wish I had read the other customer reviews.
"Nice" touches like a perspective view, which does not resize when you change to overhead view, a "chase the letter" mouse action gui, which requires multiple clicks when one should be enough....
I could go on and on.
This a truly awful piece of code, with a user interface that could best be described as tortuous and exhausting.
If you love scrabble, avoid it like the plague.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a good update, 8 Oct 2003

I tend to agree with the negative comments about this version.

For what should be quite a simple game it makes demanding use of graphics more appropriate for an action game. As a result unless you have got a high spec PC it will either not run at all or runs very slowly.

There are also some design problems, e.g. the hint panel hides hints on the righthand side of the board.

In order to run this on a not very old laptop I am having to get an earlier edition 2nd hand.

Sorry ubisoft - just because you can make extensive use of DirectX 3d does not mean you have to!
