Amazon.co.uk Review

Transferred from the 2-D platform that we all knew and loved, Rayman 2 has successfully managed to make the transition to the realms of 3-D. Although offering no great leaps in the gameplaying world, it's nice to see a fun game that satisfies the small child in all of us.

The challenge of the game is your standard 3-D platform idea. You play the infamous Rayman, who has been imprisoned by the Robo-Priates who have captured and enslaved your world. Your task, with the help of your friends, is to escape and save the planet through a series of puzzles and levels.

The feel of this game is strange, as there are no new elements, and you possess the usual armoury of weapons. The genre isn't new either and at times you can see the combined forces of games such as Crash Bandicoot, Sonic and Mario all at work. But Rayman 2 manages to pull off the amazing feat of actually being a great game, and although you've seen it all before you can't help but play on.

Everything has a lovely sheen in this game. The graphics are great, and boast details that Disney would be proud of. Everybody from Rayman's best friend Globox to the weird and wonderful Teensies all have their part to play as you go on your journey offering plenty of light comedy moments and you can't help but laugh when they begin to talk in some nonsense language only for Rayman to shout "Yahoo" at the end of everything.

We have already seen games like this many times before, but this one has such an appealing gloss that you end up with a game that is better to play and beats its competitors. If you fancy the idea of sitting down to some addictive innocent fun then Rayman 2 is perfect for both children and adults alike.--Stuart Miles

I never actually played the original Rayman game. I own a Playstation but I was put off Rayman by the fact that everyone said it was VERY, VERY difficult. But then I read about this, Rayman 2: The Great Escape. It sounded promising with the N64 and PC versions getting rave reviews so I decided to buy Playstation version. So I bought it and what I played was beyond my expectations. It was magnificent. I played through the first level 'The Woods Of light' and witnessed the great graphics and brilliant sound. The gameplay was excellent but I thought that it was a bit too easy. I played through the next few set of levels and although they were strictly linear, they were golden. The design is expert with every level having a different theme which adds to the cartoony atmosphere of it all. From the swamps of the 'Marshes of Awakening' to the sheer cliffs of 'The Precipice', the game has loads of memorable moments that you'll want to keep going back to. The difficulty curve is without a doubt, one of the best I have ever witnessed. It is a pleasure to experience it. At first as I mentioned, it is really easy but it eventually gets a bit harder and I did find myself stuck on 'The Sanctuary of Stone and Fire' level. So, I battled my way through the levels and I finally finished it. Excellent, I thought. But I can't believe something so good has ended. And to my delight, I found out that it hadn't! I had only completed the game 67% because I had not found all of the 1001 lums that are spread across the levels in the game. Finding these is practically another game itself with a more explorative tactic needed to successfully find them all. It took me absolutely ages to find them all, with some being above dangerous lava and others in difficult to get to places but eventually I found them all and I really did feel a sense of achievement. I then discovered that you had to find the 6 crystals which themselves opened up a number of bonus levels which also add to the fun. But the best bit comes when you have collected all 6 crystals. You then get access to the brilliant multiplayer maze game which can handle up to 4 players. This in itself is an amazingly addictive game that I found myself playing for ages right up until I wrote this review, 4 months after I bought the game. Everything about this game is perfect from the cartoony graphics to the brilliant musical soundtrack. It is one of very few games that is truly a joy to play. Highly Recommended!

Cute & Fun 27 Oct 2000

I had many reservations on playing R2 but once started the game really lent itself to addictive fun. The only really tough bit is the end but other than that the controls were competent compared to the awful croc 2 and the way the main character mover (including ears for helicopters) and the way he interacted with other chracters was great. A little sloppy in some of the FMV but the best 3d platformer I have played in ages.

Rayman 2 is a nice, colourful platform game that is fun to play.
Rayman has a good range of fluid movements like jumping, swimming, climbing & monkey barring. Rayman can also activate a helicopter motion with his ears that allows him to glide down heights/drops. Later on this is upgraded to flying. The game benefits from a wide variety of levels, including timed levels like the Walk of Life. Some of the levels can be challenging like Whale Bay and the Sanctuary of Stone and Fire. Rayman interacts well with his character allies like Ly the Fairy, Globox etc. The game has some moments of humour e.g the Teensies Cossack dancing, aswell as boasting visually pleasing graphics.
To the super critical eye this game sometimes has some awkward camera angles and some of the foes are too easy to defeat. However, these are small drawbacks. If you manage to locate all the Lums you can unlock specials as an added bonus. Rayman 2 is definitely worthy of your consideration if your looking for a quality Playstation one, platform game that is fun for the young and adults alike.
