Amazon.co.uk Review

There is no doubt about it, the original Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear titles are fantastic games, and still manage to captivate action strategists. The latest offering from the Clancy gaming world is Covert Operation Essentials, a bizarre mixture of education and entertainment. Covert Ops provides two new elements to the Rainbow Six world: firstly a clutch of new levels and training missions, and secondly, an encyclopaedic look at the world of counter insurgency. Covert Ops is a stand-alone title, so you don't need the original game to run it.

Running on the engine of Rogue Spear, Covert Ops has the same overall game structure--you examine the intelligence, and proceed to plan and execute your mission. The Bolivian jungle level is graphically impressive and has all the atmosphere of the original titles, but gaming wise it adds nothing new. The training side of things is highly captivating and there is an abundance of material to absorb. The more you learn, the better prepared you are to tackle the challenges on the gaming side. Perhaps this would have been useful as a teaser for Rogue Spear rather than a follow-up, but at any length, the information resource will captivate fans of the Rainbow Six experience.

The graphics and gameplay are still as gripping as the predecessors, with the same attention to detail. And therein lies the beauty, and perhaps the problem. Gamers familiar with the R6 universe can instantly jump into familiar surroundings, but there is little new material to satisfy their thirst for action. For special forces enthusiasts, the wealth of information will be well received, but leave the hard-core gamers wanting more. Rainbow Six: Covert Operation Essentials gives a reminiscent spattering of new levels, but does not truly satisfy the want of more gaming action. --Chris Hall

Product Description

Think of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Covert Operations as edutainment for would-be commandos. Building upon the popular Rainbow Six franchise, not only will you play nine exciting new levels, but you will also get an insider's look at the world of covert operations. The game serves as an overview of counterterrorism operations from 1970 to today. Video interviews with top experts in the field, photos and video footage of weapons and equipment, and situation descriptions round out the gameplay, as does a special Covert Exam. Lock, load and learn

2.0 out of 5 stars The End Of An Era 28 Nov 2000
By A Customer
After having bought all the Rainbow series, this has to be the biggest let down of them all. Dont get me wrong, the training pack is excellent. It contains a wealth of information about CT teams from around the world, the gear that they use and CQB tactics with plenty of videos for you to watch. But if you want this game just for the missions DO NOT bother getting it. It says on the box that there nine new missions. Rubbish. There are in fact only three missions and six pointless training missions. Within the three missions only one of them is actually worth playing (the one featured on the back of the box in the jungle). The six training missions are absolute garbage, the spaces are too confined and there are still all the little quirks, for example; One of the training missions is set in a hospital, as soon as you walk in you shoot the first guy then later on there is a terrorist hidden behind a BULLET-PROOF curtain, I mean come on, I even used the Light50 on the thing, but did it go through? NO. Also there are no new weapons for you to play with, and the only training missions available are the six that come with the game, so you cannot go and practice door breaching as you could on Rogue Spear. My personal opinion of this game is that it is rubbish. Although if you more interested in the history of CT teams (although I'll tell you this now, the SAS were the first and still are the best apart from the SBS !!!), the weapons, tactics and the intel then this is for you.

Please feel free to E-Mail me for comments on my review. Thanks.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice missions, but..... 24 Nov 2001
By A Customer
A weird game simply because its a education package on how to play the game/ learning about the real activties which go on in our big bad world. Anyway, the missions (only 3!) are good. The layout of each map is impressive, especially the forest map. Although theres only 3 missions, there are 5 training maps. These are good becasue unlike the "city streets" or "killhouses" found in the previous Rainbow games, there are maps like the hospital and junk yard.

The education part of the game is okay. If you are not very good at these kinds of games then it can come in handy, if not you can enjoy the videos of people talking about experiences.

Overall Covet Ops is not a bad game. The fact that its so short and quite expensive makes it a hard choice seeing as there are games like Rogue Spear or Black Thorn to choose from. If you have the money and just love to play Tom Clancy's games, then buy it. If not, your not missing out.

2.0 out of 5 stars Covert Ops - So close to a really good product 26 Dec 2000
Anyone considering buying Covert Ops should be aware that the statement "9 new levels" is misleading, as the game contains only 3 missions which can be played at 3 different levels of difficulty. The Bolivian Jungle mission is excellent, and requires serious team-work to win. The other 2 missions, however, were very easy to finish (in all 3 levels of difficulty) and I managed to finish all the games in one evening. (And I'm not that good at this game)

Potential buyers might be better off waiting for this game to hit the bargain bin at their local PC World, which I feel it will do real quick.
