Manufacturer's Description

In Beyond Good & Evil the vast, peaceful planet of Hyllis has fallen under siege by a relentless alien race. After a desperate struggle to defend her island, a Hyllian named Jade collapses in exhaustion - only to be tormented by disturbing visions. Despite public assurances that the planet has been secured, Jade begins to suspect that there's more to these invasions than the government has disclosed. When a rebel organization reinforces her doubts, Jade begins a harrowing journey to get to the core of the conspiracy.

Armed with her camera, aikido staff, and resolute investigative skills, Jade sets out to expose the truth and to liberate the minds of her deceived people. Pushed to the very edge of her physical and spiritual will, she soon discovers that even these limits are not what they seem... Her quest for the truth knows no bounds.

Game of the Year 10 Aug 2004
Beyond Good & Evil is a pretty dull title. It doesn't describe the game particularly well, nor does it stand out from the dozens of other generic titles that contain words like "destiny", "total" or "extreme". It also has nothing to do with Nietzsche philosophy.

But it as a very, very good game.

First of all, the world that you are allowed to explore in BG&E is absolutely fantastic. You can travel around on your hoverboat, fire at innocent sailors and get pulled over by the local law enforcment, drop by the bar and play a few mini-games to some EXCELLENT little tunes, disappear into caves and chase smugglers, and snoop about almost anywhere you please. Everything is absolutely beatiful and feels very much alive, which culture, creatures and characters that don't feel the slightest bit cliché.

The game seamlessly blends together several genres to produce an experience not unlike the Zelda games. You can wonder around as Jade and take pictures of the islands many animals, earning cash for those vital upgrades for your hovercraft. You can then leap in your hovercraft and drive around the island, perhaps attend a hovercraft race or too. The main part of the game is sneaking about and "exposing the conspiracy", and there is certainly a lot of fun to be had there.

Some have their gripes. You can generally finish the game in 10-15 hours, and it is easy. But each one of those hours will be relished, and a replay will no doubt be in order, if only to snap each and every one of those camera-shy critters. BG&E cuts the crap, and doesn't bother sending you any utterly dull fetch-quests like 'Wind Waker' did near the end.

The game remains a breath of fresh air, a step in the right direction. If video games are to be considered "art" at some point in the future, then this is certainly the way forward. I promise you all that the adventures of Jade, Pey'j and Double H won't disappoint.

Despite the low number of sales of the game it is a beauty!! The game mixes stealth (not boring, wait-around-for-ages-for-something-to-happen stealth) action, comedy and a well written story, which is aided by excellent voice acting and animation, to bring you an extremely fun and genuinly touching game. The gameplay is excellent and the game also boasts good graphics, an immersive world and many exciting plot twists.

The side quest of photographing the animals of the planet allows you witness the diversity of the world and just how much thought has gone into the game as well as making you money to upgrade your hovercraft which is extremely fun to drive ( and race in some of the other side quests).

It left me wanting more and it will do the same to you. A perfect addition to your collection, brought to you from the makers of the excellent prince of persia.

Live it, love it 17 Feb 2005
What makes the world worth saving?

You live in a lighthouse, you drive a hovercraft and you take photograhps for a living. Pretty cool... except for the army of dim-witted but disturbingly well-armed goons slowly invading your futuristic island paradise. You've been trying to ignore them... until now.

As a gamer, you enter the dark world of the Alpha Sections and the DomZ beacuse it's a game. But what you experience here isn't just a challenge to your skills as a gamer - it's the challenge to the skills of the character. You've not got a controller and an armchair - you've got a camera, a fighting staff, a couple of good friends and some natural wit and agility - and that's it. When your heart sinks at the obstacles before you... and you pause to gather your courage and examine your convictions... and then you grin from ear to ear as you pull a fast one out of the bag... they aren't the emotions of a gamer. That's empathy, and that's magic, and slowly you begin to realise:

This is a FANTASTIC world to be in. Who wouldn't want to save it?

Very, very tight
This game is short(ish) for a reason. That reason is attention to detail. The world of Hyllis is small but perfectly formed, and there's plenty to see and do on your way through. Read more
