Product Description

Dawn of Discovery takes place in the year 1404, when King George's land is suffering from severe droughts and brutal famine. Aware of his people's distress, the king calls on his two sons, William and Edward, to acquire new territories in order to produce enough goods to satisfy the needs of his empire's inhabitants. Whereas Edward suggests aggressive means to collect the precious resources, his brother William offers a peaceful solution, proposing to explore new and unsettled lands in the south of the kingdom. With his Father's blessing, William heads south to the mysterious Orient and returns with valuable new technologies such as the water pump that allows dry lands to be cultivated in order to produce enough food for the people. But there are still many unmet needs within the king's empire, and players are tasked with the mission of fulfilling those needs while both expanding and sustaining the vast society.

Love it 10 Dec 2011
By Andrew TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Fun:
I'm glad Ubisoft haven't just done a hit and run and continue to release patches and expansions for what is an excellent game! Patch 1.2 now available and as mentioned in my Anno 1404 review patch 1.1 removed the drm and need for disc in drive. Though the expansion re-adds the drm.

There's added scenarios;

There are new buildings, the Bailiwick is well useful, it's an "accounting/command" building which cuts maintenence costs & brings the control of all buildings in a settlement under one roof, courtesy of the reeves book, which is kind of a ledger, it's actually a really bloody useful building. build it as soon as possible.

The large tradesmans cog is worth it's weight in gold. it has six holds & 2 "buffing" sockets, is as fast as the large oriental cargo ship, and packs one hell of a punch in it's own right, it's almost as powerful as the large oriental warship.

The new palace looks awesome, there are other new building like cemetaries etc. there are also gameplay tweaks like removing the need for weapons when building settlement defences etc.

One amazing new change is the ability to infilitrate other economies using spies and exert your influence. You can also gain economic control of another player through expanding your control of their council.

Features of the expansion (as the product listing is somewhat sparse!):

Anno 1404 Venice combines the signature gameplay mechanics of Anno 1404 and the richness of the Venetian culture. In addition, gamers are now able to play Anno 1404 with their friends thanks to the new online multiplayer mode. Key Features:

The rich Anno 1404 environment gets complemented with a new Venetian setting offering new possibilities of interaction:

Build two new Venetian ship types: the small and big tradesman cog
Develop secret cabinets, infiltrate your enemies and sabotage their expansion
Take control over enemy cities thanks to your influence in the cities' council board

Play Anno 1404 online in a multiplayer mode:

Choose to play versus or coop to defeat the AI by combining your techniques
Up to 8 players

New challenges and quests:

Up to 60 new items and 300 new quests with two new types: trading race and ship boarding
Discover and exploit a new type of island, the Volcano island
New scenarios to face new challenges with new achievements, medals and crests

And for anyone wondering you need the original to play :-) Like my review? Rate It!

Fun:
Anno 1404 Gold is the original 1404 game plus the Venice add-on. It can be played in two ways, a campaign which is essentially a really long tutorial or as a sandbox which is totally open ended. Its a truly lovely looking game with fine textures and lighting effects. The premise is simple, settle an island and make things. Then settle another island and make more things! As your society progresses different classes of folk will move in. Your basic peasants are happy with a fish supper and some cider but when more sophisticated citizens move in they want spices, nice shirts, beer, wine, fur coats, books etc and more splendid buildings to live and work in. Keep them happy by supplying the goods they want and they will keep paying their taxes - disappoint them and they will simply leave your lands. In some ways its difficult to know what age group they game is aimed at. The computer characters - both allies and competitors - can best be described as Disney-like; your sturdy mentor, the amiable old cove of the Sultans envoy, a Dick Dastardly type Evil Corsair and assorted other stereotypes, some with voice acting so awful you will want to de-select them. At the same time there's enough management tasks and quests to keep an adult happily occupied for several hours. Indeed the game helpfully nags you if you play for too long a stretch - and you will. There's some military aspect to the game but this is not a major feature - think of Anno as a superior version of The Settlers rather than Civilization. The Corsairs for example will extort money from you and attack if you don't pay. You can build a big and expensive fleet to keep them at bay - but you cannot seem to eradicate them even when you know where their lair is! The game designers clearly favour the peace through trade school of thought. Likewise your AI competitors are not enemies as such, just folk out to make a living. They can be set to be docile in the game set up - fortunately, since the game gives them a huge starting position advantage. The good thing though is that the settings are very flexible and you can simply de-select all the computer controlled players if you want to have a gentle time exploring, building and interacting with the remaining NPCs. Recommended for those who want a relaxing game to unwind with
