Book Description

14 Oct 2004
Everything about the band U2 is huge. From their music, to their tours, to their influence on global popular culture and politics. In the US they are cultural icons as well as multimillion album selling pop stars. Underpinning their popularity is their passion for touring. For the last 20 years they have hardly been off the road. It is the thing they love to do most. And it is touring which drives their creativity and reflects the direction of the band. From the modest Tick Tock Tour of 1980, through the Joshua Tree, and on to the videomedia extravaganza of ZooTV in the early 90s and Popmart in the late 90s then the more intimate Elevation tour of the last two years, it is the tours which have set their agenda. For the first time the band has agreed to allow a book on this vital part of their creative energy. The photographs are hand picked from their archive put together over 25 years. There will be a commentary by Diana Scrimgeour, who has been a photographer on recent tours, and first-person accounts from the close associates of the band. U2 Show will be the music publishing event of 2004.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the most beautiful U2 book published to date. 22 Oct 2004
By LA_Sea - Published on Amazon.com
Having attended 8 U2 shows dating back to 1992 and having been a fan since 1987, this is the book that I have been waiting for. It is simply one of the best U2 books that I have ever seen. It was much larger than I expected (1 1/4" thick) filled with gorgeous, large color photographs all of which relate to U2's long touring history, nearly all of which I have never seen before (there are a handful that I have seen in other books). The design and layout of the book is also top rate. Willie Williams (U2's longtime live tour designer) contributes quite a bit in terms of the ideas behind the design of each tour (The book is divided into chapters that chronicle each touring era (Boy 1980-81, War 1983, The Unforgettable Fire 1984-1985, Joshua Tree 1987 etc. etc.) with a bevy of supporting photographs (as described earlier). Some of the cooler shots are of Bono's "Elevation" jackets hanging in a closet and one that shows a rack of 20 (or so) of Edge's guitars.

There is also a detailed chapter where all the artists, lighting directors, guitar techs, head of wardrobe, promoters, graphic designers, DJs, agents, video directors etc. involved with U2 over the years talk about their individual experiences with the band. Remember, this is a book about their touring history/production and not about the lives of the individual members so not a lot about Bono, Edge, Adam and Larry (though they are obviously in nearly every photograph). The book was put together by Diana Scrimgeour who was asked by Paul McGuinness to document the Elevation 2001 tour. Also, the price of $35 is much lower than expected (and you can get it even cheaper on Amazon for only $21). I've paid up to $75 for books similar in scope. A perfect companion for the new album which comes out in about a month and the new tour in 2005.

4.0 out of 5 stars Technically great 17 Feb 2005
By nHansen - Published on Amazon.com
If you have any interest in what happens to make a U2 concert happen, by the crew members, designers, and band, this is the book for you. It is not only a backstage pass to most of U2's greatest tours, it is also a technical approach to a technical process. Pictures are pretty good too, but don;t purchase this book if you want some old photos from long-gone tours; buy this book if you want to read about the tours.

This would be a good book for someone interested in becoming a "roadie" or stage crew member, and all the like, for it talks a lot about how and why the tours were as they were. It will require a lot of reading, so don't thing it is a simple page turner.

If you love U2, want to know more about their tours, from the inside out, this book is for you. Get ready to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful and wonderful book 2 Mar 2005
By Axver - Published on Amazon.com
This is the kind of book that any U2 fan would treasure forever. It currently has pride of place on my bookshelf and I never tire of picking it up and looking at the marvellous photography or reading the fascinating and detailed articles that cover essentially every aspect of U2's touring history that you could ever wish to know. The depth of information is amazing and presents one of the most intriguing and vivid insights to date on the finest live band in the world. What's more, the price is exceptionally good for the quality of the product. I would have expected it to be at least double or triple the price.

If you are interested in U2 and haven't bought this book yet, do so now. You won't regret it.

2.0 out of 5 stars What was I thinking..?? UGH!!! 20 Aug 2005

First time I looked through this book, was curiosity of my local library. Checked out, and was blown away with how cool this book is. That was 9 months ago.

Being a big U2 fan-and since the price had dropped considerably-decided to buy the book. After a few minutes of 'reading' it, realized how crappy the pictures in the book are. Seemes like 90-99% of the pictures are washed out, grainy, and horribly reproduced here. Was there any quality control as this book went to press? And for those 'new, never before seen pictures' they are pretty ho hum. Because its not totally horrid, I'd give it 2.5 stars. Just, well, disappointing. If I had to pay the full MSRP, I'd give it ZERO stars.

While I must say, for $14 or so, you do get some good training on how heavy your next laptop will be....
