Description

As with the Beatles, part of the timelessness of the Beach Boys' legacy is their dual identity as teen-pop act and groundbreaking rock revolutionaries. Those whose affinity lies primarily with the sugary surf melodies of the former will beriding a wave of ecstasy over this current compilation. Arriving at a time when the CD is being phased out but vinyl enthusiasm has been rejuvenated, SINGLES aims to add value to a compact-disc collection of Brian Wilson & Co.'s early work(the first 16 singles, to be exact) by repackaging it in the original 45 sleeve art. The music contained within ("I GetAround", "In My Room", "Little Deuce Coupe", "Surfin' U.S.A".) is most certainly in any fan's album rack, CD shelf, or iPod, but Capitol's deluxe packaging (including a telescoping box and a 48-page photo book wrapped in faux sand) helps the listener to recreate this band's original era. Of course,audio completists are also offered several different takes and remasterings of songs such as "Help Me, Rhonda" and "Please Let Me Wonder".

I am a really big Beach Boys fan... and I mean BIG.

But seeing this, the words "Off" and "Rip" spring to mind. A great opportunity lost (besides whatever happened to the limited boxset that we were kinda promised a few years back of the lost Beach Boys' "Smile" sessions..). The amount they expect us to shell out for just a handful of unreleased mixes shows that Capitol or EMI or whoever don't care a jot for the real fan. Shame on everyone involved... and if that goes all the way up the line to Brian, so be it. I give it two stars for the content (which is great), but it rates as -2 for the ripoff factor.

The quality of the music within this collection is astounding. 16 CDs with top quality music and some new stereo mixes included. Very nice packaging and a cut above similar collections by other artists. Probably more for the Beach Boys fanatic so if you are simply interested in owning the standard hits on CD then there are plenty of greatest hits collections to choose from at very reasonable prices at Amazon. Having read the previous reviewers comments I admit I was sceptical but when I received this box set and listened to the timeless classics on the 16 CDS, I was more than happy with my purchase.
