This is German naval history from a German perspective and not just another book about U-boats, but a valuable contribution to our knowledge or German operations and attitudes, nevertheless it is a pity that for a little more scholarship and research the author could have turned a good book into an excellent one.

Killer Submarine! 1 May 2013
By Michael OConnor - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
U-48 was the top-scoring submarine of all time, the Type VII B boat being credited with sinking 57 merchantmen and warships totalling over 300,000 gross tons. Franz Kurowski relates the gripping history of this killer U-boat in U-48, THE MOST SUCCESSFUL U-BOAT OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR, a 2012 Frontline Books release.

Considering U-48's record, it's amazing to realize its last war patrol ended in June 1941, the boat being assigned to training duties after that. Likewise, a majority of U-48's kills were singletons, many being scored before the convoy system was standardized. During most of her career, she was commanded by Herbert Schultze, who ended up receiving the Oak Leaves to the Knight's Cross. Along with being a top scorer, 'Vaddi' Schultze was widely respected by his crew and waged war as humanely as possible.

Kurowski's book, translated from the German, is a good, solid, entertaining read. He gets high marks for his research, each cruise being nicely-detailed. (I have a problem with his reconstructed conversations but that's just me).

Submarine buffs will enjoy Kurowski's U-48. It offers a detailed and informative look at 'the other side's' submarines at war. Recommended.

Good story about the history off boat warfare 20 Jan. 2013
By Viv Roberts - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
A good combination of u boat logs and allied records to list the sinkings. The reader becomes embroiled in the day today fighting under the seas. Many people are unaware of how a mechanical failure on the torpedoes prevented more allied sinkings than anything else!

Get 'Em While The Getting's Good! 10 Dec. 2013
By Thomas M. Russell III - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
To me, this was an excellent example of a well-commanded and well-sailed German submarine in the early years of WW II when large convoys of merchant vessels were sent to sea with minimal and simple protective coverage. The numbers alone tell the story of cut and slash from September 1939 to the beginning of 1943. The book contains much detail in the business of submarine warfare, but in equal measure are the descriptions of submarine actions on patrol. Being a 20 year submariner from 1948 to 1967, I could see myself on board U-48 and being a part of it all. The detail part of the book can get long, but the action part makes up for it. U-48 had incredible good fortune and she caught my heart.

Great Adventure Story 10 Jan. 2014
By Greg Claydon - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
Found this book well written and easy to read. It was good to get the prospective from the German side. I found the facts and information very detailed, a lot of work has gone into producing this book. This book also dispels some of the myths surrounding the U-Boats and their treatment of Allied shipping crew who ended up in lifeboats.
For those interested in War History it is well worth reading.

A great read if your into the history of the battle for the Atlantic 8 Oct. 2013
By james henry baker - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
A fantastic account of U boat life on the high seas & the battle for the Atlantic. Why these men went out time & time again, but as with all men in war they do it for the bloke standing next to him not the politicians who send them.
