Book Description

25 Feb 2014
It is 1917 and Charlotte Blackshaw is only eight years old when her little sister Victoria vanishes from the magnificent country estate of Tyringham Park. The feverish search for Victoria soon uncovers jealousies and deceits that the inhabitants of the grand house have fought for years to keep hidden. As Charlotte grows, she believes that her mother and others wish that it was she who'd disappeared, rather than pretty, enchanting Victoria. Terrorised by her nanny, she becomes intent on escaping the confines of the estate that once she loved. But Tyringham Park and its mysteries will never release their hold on her...

Review

McLoughlin marshals the gothic suspense of Daphne Du Maurier . . . Tyringham Park delivers grand passion, secret intra-class trysts, kidnap and violent deaths within a gripping romance (Irish Independent)

The Last September meets Downton Abbey. Part emotional, part historical, it is all consuming - we urge you not to read it in one go (Woman's Way)

Dark and densely plotted, this is The Thorn Birds with a dash of Du Maurier's Rebecca - brilliant (Irish Daily Mail) --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

About the Author

Rosemary McLoughlin, born and reared as Rosie Fahey in Australia, has lived in Ireland for forty years and isn't sick of it yet. She lives in Dublin with her husband Kevin, and has two adult children, Cian and Orla. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Slightly Depressing Page Turner 19 Mar 2013
By Bess75

Parts of me enjoyed this book - it's fast paced with direct prose, easy to read and hard to put down. However, I found the repeated inclusion of physical and emotional child abuse quite upsetting to read as a mother, which I know is all part of the story line but its impact on the lives of the characters was deeply saddening with SPOILER ALERT no happy endings. In fact, my biggest issue with this book was its sudden, abrupt and disappointing ending. I thought there had been a mistake and I was missing a final few chapters from my download, but alas not!

3.0 out of 5 stars Too long winded and loses its way 17 April 2013
By Babsso

I enjoyed the start of this book which held such promise. I loved the style of writing and the story is a good one. However three quarters of the way through I got bored with the main character who seems to have gone from a plucky brave girl to a weak willed pathetic adult. I just found I could not be bothered to find out what happens at the end so I gave up reading it. Maybe I will go back to it but for now I really dont have the interest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant read 16 May 2012
I completely agree with the other reviews. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it was EXTREMELY hard to put down. The story immediately draws you in and keeps you enthralled right to the end. Part mystery, part romance, part historical saga, it is haunting, tense and beautifully written. The author has a real talent for storytelling and shows great insight into the human condition - both its frailties and strengths - through the development of her memorable characters over several decades. An intelligent and absorbing read. Buy it!

3.0 out of 5 stars readable 2 April 2014
By Sue B
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Took some time to grab my interest. The time setting was interesting spanning the beginning of the 20th century, with the tale end of the first WW and the second WW. Only touched the Irish Problem and as it was partly set in Ireland that was disappointing. The end was a little contrived and I felt left up in the air.

4.0 out of 5 stars An epic family saga 5 Mar 2014
Format:Paperback
Tyringham Park is an epic family saga about the wealthy Blackshaw family who live on a large estate in Ireland. The story begins when the youngest daughter, a young child named Victoria, goes missing. As the story unfolds, the personalities and motivations of family and servants within the household are slowly revealed as the family structure begins to fall apart. At the heart of the story is Charlotte. Ignored by her cold, unloving mother, she suffers horrendous abuse by her nanny.

I love historical family sagas and this book provided me with hours of pure enjoyment. I love how the characters changed and/or interacted with each other. They were unpredictable, each with their own faults. Although the novel is quite long, and at times a little slow, in no way did this take away from my enjoyment. I continued to be interested in the story. With an unforgettable surprise ending, I definitely recommend this book to all who love family drama and epic stories of great depth. A wonderful read, that’s for certain!

4.0 out of 5 stars Unusual book 26 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Not really sure where to start with this, in many ways an unusual book. The story started with great potential and there are big parts I really enjoyed when I couldn't put the book down but seemed to lose its way and become tedious somewhat in the middle.

I'm glad I persevered as the book was worth reading and will probably be one that sticks in my mind for a while after.
