Review

"My own conviction, sweeping all those reaches of living fiction I know, is that Conrad's figure stands out from the field like the Alps from the Piedmont plain." --H. L. Mencken --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Product Description

In these four stories, written between 1900 and 1902, Joseph Conrad bid gradual farewell to his adventurous life at sea and began to confront the more daunting complexities of life on land in the twentieth century. In "Typhoon" Conrad reveals, in the steadfast courage of an undemonstrative captain and the imaginative readiness of his young first mate, the differences between instinct and intelligence in a partnership vital to human survival. "Falk", the companion sea-story, contrasts, as Conrad once put it, 'common sentimentalism with the frank standpoint of a more or less primitive man', a man with a conscience, however, about the girl he desires. In one of the 'land-stories' Conrad explores the utter isolation of an East European emigrant in England; in the other, the plight of a woman ironically trapped by the unwitting alliance of two retired widowers - each blind in his own way.

The title story dragged a bit for me and is not Conrad at his descriptive best.Amy Foster and To-morrow like-wise could have been written by anyone and somewhat lack the style prevalent in his more popular works.Falk however saved the day and is Conrad at his best, the first few pages are literary genius and the story takes a dark twist towards the end which marks this out as one of his finest pieces of writing.

This book contains four stories, Typhoon and Falk being novellas, and the short stories Amy Foster and Tomorrow. Most people are probably aware of Typhoon, and to a lesser extent Amy Foster, and this book is a good blend of land and sea tales.

Most people will think of Typhoon and the fantastic description of the actual storm, but this like the other stories in the book is not really the main part of the tale - it is what to do with the fate of the coolies that the ship is carrying. Indeed all the tales in this book deal with alienation, misunderstanding and prejudice. After all how can anyone not be struck with how the survivor is looked upon in Amy Foster, sometimes as almost a beast, and other times as more or less invisible.

All the stories in this book are similar in that respect and that is why they are all gripping, and why they are still relevant. After all my sister is currently working Stateside and she is causing much amusement amongst the Americans by using our everyday expressions - it is almost like she is used as a thing of amusement. She even said that they sit there in the office using the urban dictionary website to decipher the correct meaning of our English expressions. This book is a must read if you are at all interested in cultural differences, and is very psychological. All in all this is a great book that you will want to keep and read many times.

A superb collection 30 Jun 2006
Format:Hardcover
I want to concentrate on "Typhoon" itself as I've reviewed the other two stories ("Nigger of the Narcissus" and "Shadowline") elsewhere.

Style - 3/5

Plot - 5/5

Readability - 4/5

This is by far the most enjoyable of the works of Joseph Conrad that I've read. The story builds up well right from the beginning and turns into a thrilling roller coaster as the typhoon strikes. All of the characters are very believable and add their own particular essence to the story. The only thing I found that I didn't like was the way that the last chapter ends the story very abruptly.
