More About the Author

I was born a few streets away from the sea in Saltburn, Yorkshire, and later moved to Devon. After a brief stint in London, I went to Leeds University, and from Leeds I came up to the Highlands in a camper van, and have been here ever since, again, just a few streets away from the sea.
My vocation has always been books, working in one library and then another. Today I work part-time in Tain Library, from where they'll have to drag me out screaming before I go willingly.
The rest of my time is spent writing, and squeezing in various other literary-related activities: I was Chair of the Board of Moniack Mhor Writing Centre for two years, and on the founding Committee of the Bloody Scotland International Crime Writing Festival, as well as being judge Chair for the Annual Highlands and Islands Short Story Association.
So, lots going on, and three dogs to exercise on top of that - good job I live a couple of minutes from the fantastic Shandwick Bay in Easter Ross!

Review

'Clio Gray is a master of atmosphere and sensuousness. She
combines historical realism with the bizarre, whimsy with the macabre.
Reading her is like being at a sumptuous feast in a palace, just before it
is stormed.' -- Allan Bissett

5.0 out of 5 stars in awe 12 May 2012
By cynthia
Format:Paperback
Types of Everlasting Rest is one of the best short story collections I have read. Clio captures the emotional subtleties and weird complexities that make up human nature. Her stories are set in odd places and times, but never feel inaccessable. I have re-read it and enjoyed it even more the second time. I think Clio is one of the most original writers in Scotland.

5.0 out of 5 stars Open Letter to Clio Gray 3 Dec 2007
Format:Paperback
Dear Ms Gray,
I have a wee complaint to make.
I bought your book on Saturday, in Ullapool, understanding it to be an analysis of the different forms that long term repose might take. (As per your title: Types of Everlasting Rest) Imagine my surprise to find that, instead of slipping off into the academic and rather dreamy state of contemplation that I had expected, I found myself in a mysterious proto-European twilight world surrounded by a forest of marvellous stories! I had to be quick on my feet, you bet!
While the outcome in my case was a happy one, I dread to think what might have happened to an inexperienced reader wandering into such a disconcertingly rich and wonderful collection. Would they ever find their way out? While I applaud your skill and imagination, I am not at all sure that you have properly considered where responsibility might lie in such circumstances.
Yours,
Concerned, of Strathpeffer

Types of Everlasting Rest is an anthology of short stories from award wining author Clio Gray. All are startling original, black and so utterly unlike anything else. It is no wonder she won the Orange Short Story prize - and reading that prize winning story, I should Have Listened Harder, one understands why. From Italy's volcanoes to the Russian steppe, to the fate of Boy Scouts in Czechoslovakia during the Second World War, these short stories are filled with intriguing historical backgrounds, and the fascination of the macabre. Laden with sumptuous detail, each story leads the reader directly into the compelling and sometimes bizarre inner worlds of her fascinating characters.

`Powerful stuff ... the mood is dark, occasionally shot through with flashes of lightning...worth savouring. Clio Gray is an uncommonly interesting writer. One wonders, expectantly, what she will do next.' The Scotsman

Gray is a writer you can rely on not to write quite like anyone else... ...more Mervyn Peak and Gormenghast than Jane Austen and Sense and Sensibility..." Scottish Sunday Herald

Gray has a distinctive voice and the subject matter and themes of these stories are out of the ordinary... the mood is dark, occasionally shot through with flashes of lightning... The Scotsman
