Product Description

Review

It is an incredible book, which deals in depth with every detail of diabetes care in young people and it never ducks any issues. --Dr Charles Fox, Consultant Physician at Northampton General Hospital

This book must be successful if it can run into a fifth edition and of course it is. When I was in a busy children s diabetes clinic I supplied this book for borrowing or purchase by many parents and they gained enormously by having it available. It is packed full of good practical advice to help parents and young people deal with their difficult condition successfully. --Dr Peter Swift, Consultant Paediatrician, Leicester Royal Infirmary

Its strengths lie in its ability to connect with the reader, ability to explain and make the reader understand medical knowledge in a clear and concise manner. A wide array of topics are covered, making this book a unique reference book for the patient. The illustrations are wonderful and yet simple in their approach and complement the text in a beautiful way. And further the book provides up-to-date and accurate information. This is an incredible book - both to patients (either children or adolescents or even adults) and to their carers and parents. Some of the complex medical thoughts and ideas are expressed in a simple way using a direct narrative style, accompanied by excellent yet simple illustrations and diagrams. I have recommended this book to patients and trainees in the past and will continue to recommend it in the future too! --BMA Medical Book Awards

If you only buy one reference book to help you manage your child's type 1 diabetes, buy this one. It is thorough and authoritative, easy for the layman to understand, and considerate of its readership. The author is clearly a humane and caring medical expert who cares deeply not only about his patients' physical well-being but about their emotions too. My daughter, now 9, was diagnosed at the age of 3, and I wish I'd had this book from the beginning of our journey. With Dr Hanas on side, I feel so much better equipped. I reckon in any medical crisis, knowledge is power, and this book is very empowering indeed.

Despite the title, this book is just as relevant for older adults. I've been diagnosed type 1 for 34 years and for much of that held on to knowledge and beliefs from my early days. I bought this book about 2 years ago (a previous edition) and it opened my eyes to so many new ideas as well as describing some of the more complex processes that affect my diabetes.

I would urge any type 1 diabetic, whatever their age, to get hold of a copy. It wouldn't hurt a few health professionals to read it either!

This book covers pretty much everything you need to know on diabetic children.

The only negative thing on the book is, every single one of the 400 pages is packed full of information, so it'll take you a long while to digest all of it. Having that, this also means you're likely to find answers to any question you have.

If you need a book on diabetes, get this one first.

Quite simply this is the Bible for those of us who have children with Type 1 Diabetes. Clearly written for the layman, and intelligent advice. Ragnaar Hanas is brilliant and his book is his advice in a (large) nutshell. If you have a child with T1D then you will reach for this book time and time again

I purchased this book a week after my 12yo son had been diagnosed with type I diabetes. While I was familiar with the physio-pathology of the disease, thanks to my background as a (non practicing) MD, I was also a devastated father feeling helpless in front of a mountain of practical questions and scary "what ifs" scenarios.

The first virtue of that book was to calm that anxiety: yes, the problems were there, but they were manageable and clear practical strategies to deal with them were outlined. Then, it is truly encyclopedic: there doesn't seem to be a situation for which quick and immediately useful practical information is not available. From physical activity to religious fasting days, from hanling colds to needle angles, everything is there. It is well written, immediately accessible and as scientifically accurate as its form and scope allows. While I did buy more advanced books such as "Type 1 Diabetes:Clinical Management of the Athlete" because my son wanted to maintain his 14+ weekly hours of intensive exercise, most of the additional info I gathered was already summarized here.

To be short: this is the first time in my life that I am so deeply thankful that a book exists. It helped tremendously throughout the discovery phase and is a reference I wouldn't want to be without in the future. Thanks Dr Hanas. Thanks.

It is so self explainatory and provides so many examples in a very understable way, that it has become my new bible. Any questions, any situations you can face on daily basis...it answers them all. It is very realistic and provides really good advices.
I wish it was translated to other languagues so my family could have acceess to all the information provided in this book.
A big T H A N K S! to Dr. Ragnar Hannas

This is quite simply the best and most readable book I have come across on type 1 Diabetes. It is aimed at the younger diabetic but is relevant to all. When I was first diagnosed with diabetes I had to use a glass syringe and reusable needle which had to be boiled up daily. Thankfully things have changed a lot since then and I am fortunate enough to have a pump now, but since reading this book I have discovered an incredible amount of valuable research and factual information that have greatly added to my pretty extensive experience and knowledge, and will, I feel have a beneficial impact on my well- being.
I think the illustrations and graphs are helpful in conveying key messages and also when appropriate add a touch of humour making it all the more user friendly. It is set out on the page in such a way as to make it easy to dip in and out of.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone how has or is interested in diabetes.

My daughter is a newly diagnosed diabetic so I needed to find information quickly. This book isnt designed to be read from cover to cover, but should be used as a reference book, which i do on a daily basis. This is especially written for children (parents of) and adolescents so it makes it even more relevant when discussing issues. I'd highly recommend this for any parents of newly diagnosed children.
