I don't agree entirely with magazine reviews!,
This review is from: Tycoon City: New York (PC CD) (Video Game)
In Tycoon City, the aim is to build up the biggest business empire you possibly can. You have to build a huge range of shops, services & houses to cater for the ever-growing population as the city grows and evolves (towards the end of the game, the city can be filled with upto 60,000 individual New Yorkers!)You may have read some magazine reviews saying that the game is too easy and that there isn't enough 'micro management' with your businesses, but I feel that you should take into consideration what the game is trying to achive- It's trying to convey the scale of a city like New York, and it's letting you build it from the ground up. It's true that once you have built your coffee bar, for example, you can't change the prices. But in a game of this magnitude, it simply isn't required. I'm still on the first 'level' (Greenwich Village) and already I have around 60 stores. It simply wouldn't be possible once all the other districts have been opened to go around and manually change all the prices of every store you own. The way Deep Red have gone about the management of your businesses is spot on. I suppose the main aim of the game is simply to build the city from the ground up, rather than micro manage hundereds of shops. I recommend this game to anyone who is interested in the genre. I'm a huge fan of the genre and don't feel for one minute that that the game is missing something. Sure, it's almost impossible not to make a profit, but it's just a satisfying experience building New York from the ground up. Certainly worth a purchase in my opinion- just for the sheer scale and gorgeous visuals, let alone the engrossing gameplay.

Good idea, but needs improvement,

This is a good game. The overall idea of what the game entails is good, however, the control needs iumprovement. I have found it difficult to navigate my way around the various streets using either mouse or keyboard. Also, sometimes the game can seem a little repetative, as you don't really manage the stores you create, you just pretty much build them. I am a huge fan of games like these but I just think they really could have done better with this. I am hoping that there will be a few add ons in the future to liven it up a bit. Overall it isn't a bad game, but it isn't a great one either, which it really had the potential to be.

I was really excited about this game. I was always a fan of SIMS games and the general management games of which the Tycoon games are one. Anyhow, the aim of the game is to expand your mini empire in Noew York by building structures and other grand buildings. I use the word "build" loosley because all the buildings are already-made. This is a downside as the only thing left for you to do is pick the sight - you can't even see inside the buildings you own!
You are expected to manage the costs and the visitors that come to your buildings. You can add attractions such as street acts or actors in costume to create interest but this is not much of a development really. Basically, you select a building from your menu and pick the sight and so on. There are options to upgrade your building but when you can't see what's going on inside, what's the point, right? As with many of the Tycoon games, the concept is great but in this case lots more could have been done with this game. If your into admiring your handy work and seeing the impact of your improvements like you can in Fast Food Tycoon 2 for example (you actually see the customers and what they are thinking, and the better your restaurant, the more customers visit) this probably isn't the game for you! A bit of a let down, to be frank.
