Book Description

In 2004 Karen Leibovitch was a busy mother of three young children, running a small counselling practice from home. But a routine visit to her GP led to a diagnosis of oral cancer, and within a matter of weeks Karen's life was irrevocably changed.

Surgery saved her life but left her with many challenges and a distressing sense of emotional disconnection from the family she loves.

Desperate to find her way back, she is told it will take two years to regain what she has lost. The phrase two years to 'normal' becomes a barometer against which she measures her journey towards recovery.

A loving and inspirational memoir written with honesty, insight and a self-deprecating sense of humour, Two years to 'normal' will reassure those facing similar circumstances that they and their families are not alone in their experiences.

Not quite sure how I stumbled across this read - but I am pleased I did. Although it was a 'journey with cancer', much of the book was addressing how Karen recovered mentally from depression. It is an interesting perspective on counselling especially as Karen is a counsellor who herself has counselling - and there is a message of learning to deal with the bad things in life. I loved the description of the most pampered dog - of tucking her in bed, complete with pillow, covers and hot water bottle! I also liked some of the bits of Karen counselling herself in front of the mirror! Although Karen had oral cancer, and found it hard to find her voice again - she has written a very insightful and inspirational book. We all experience ups and downs, and there is much to take away from this book - and some great messages.

I found this book both moving and truthful. Looking at how cancer affected all the family including the children who at times were very forceful in how they viewed their mothers illness and her inability to be as they remembered her. A very good read

A different view of being diagnosed with cancer, I sometimes wanted to get ahold of her and shake her and say get a grip yes you have cancer but you still living, but something kept me engrossed in the book and I'm very pleased with the happy ending xx
