Image of Gerald Clayton

A quarter of the age of Jazz, Gerald Clayton stakes his claim in the history and the present of this vital music with the following words, “Tradition and innovation can peacefully coexist.” In libraries and on drawing-boards around the country this statement might be true, but with Gerald behind the piano this coexistence is anything but peaceful.

Ever since Wynton Marsalis emerged in the 1980's much has been made of the argument between respecting the "jazz tradition" and maintaining a degree of innovation to ensure that the music remains alive and vibrant. In his liner notes pianist Gerald Clayton lays his manifesto down to reconcile the seeminginly two opposing strands and I think that this recording demonstrates just how successful he has been. For me, this is very much in the mould of work by musicians such as Ben Allison who have eschewed the more "way out" elements of jazz for a mainstream approach that remains thoroughly contemporary. As a consequence I don't think this CD is as edgy or risk-taking as the kind of records produced by the likes of current favourites Jason Moran or Vijay Iyer but is decidely more modern sounding than anything produced by the so-called New-Neos. This record definately sounds like it was recorded in 2009 even if those who appreciate more avant garde styles will find the offering a little bit too safe. For me, the musicianship of this group is the clincher although the quality of the writing doesn't do any harm either - small wonder when you consider the pedigree of the older generation of the Clayton clan!

Listening to this disc , it is possible to hear a wide range of influences. Sometimes the straight ahead swing produced by this trio sounds like something recorded in the 1950's - the opening "Boogablues" is very much of the style of jazz that existed bfore the emergence of the likes of Herbie Hancock or McCoy Tyner. There are almost touches of Gene Harris in there. The use of time and rhythm here is almost akin to someone like Ahmed Jamal too. The same can also be said of the standard "All of you." It is as if someone like Keith Jarrett had never existed.

The next best thing to seeing him in concert. Gerald Clayton is a dynamic young man with loads of talent. He has worked with some of the best. Not surprising with the level of professionalism he demonstrates. Buy one for yourself and another for someone you love (or just like a lot).

Gerald Clayton may be a newcomer, but his music is that of a master.
This is Jazz at its best.
I can happily line this CD up with those of the Jazz legends - Coltrane, Davis, Mingus, Gordon, Thelonious Monk...
Very much looking forward to Clayton's future ventures.
