Book Description

14 Feb 2008
This quirkily entitled book is an account of a round-the-world bicycle trip - a staggering 12,753 miles through twelve countries in fifteen months - undertaken by the author and his partner Mary, two 'ill-matched individuals' in their sixties who want more from life than the endless empty days that retirement seems to offer.Beginning with a sprint across Northern Europe that highlights the arduousness of the task ahead, the book covers the route across France, through the Rhone Valley in Switzerland, across the Alps and into Italy, then on to Greece and a gruelling ascent of the Pindos Mountains. They then travel to Turkey, where they discover the nature of Islam in practice, before venturing as far afield as Thailand, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand, and ending in Canada, where their relationship (both cycling and personal) is strained by some distressing family news. With its recollections of the physical highs and lows, personal crises, friendships formed, and enlightening, sometimes painful self-discoveries, "Two Pedestrians on Bicycles" captures all the excitement and passion of this astounding 'rites of passage' odyssey.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little gem of a book! 26 Mar 2008
Format:Paperback
I came across this wellwritten, engaging and entertaining book by happy accident - and was hooked!

"Two Pedestrians on Bicycles" is an intelligent, perceptive, vivid and witty account about two ordinary individuals bike-ride around the world It tells about the trials and tribulations encountered on (and off) the road, - and the joyful fabulous discoveries that makes up this true adventure
It shares with the us happy (and a few not so - ) encounters with many remarkable individuals (as well as with animals of the world's wildernesses)and makes informed, astute and humorous observations about natures diversity, wonders and, not least, challenges! It is pacy, packed with anecdotes, at times poetic .. and utterly absorbing.

This new author is a born story teller and raconteur and this book is an impressive and classy piece of work - a book that will inspire anyone who wants to know what it is REALLY like to circumnavigate the globe - by simply getting on your bike!

5.0 out of 5 stars Get me a bike quickly!!!!! 8 Jun 2008
Format:Paperback
I stumbled across this book by accident. Always happy to read anything about travel and human endurance, I thought that I'd give it a try. I'm so happy that I did. Revealing very little detail about Graham & Mary personally, it nevertheless describes great courage and fortitude together with a gentle, self deprecating sense of humour.

The countries themselves are the stars of this book and they are described in beautiful detail; the ups and downs of the trip making you smile, cringe and at times, laugh out loud. Chapters with enticing titles such as "close encounters of the turd kind" pull you along at a break neck speed. In fact my only criticism is that there are no paragraphs and the chapters are long, resulting in reading late into the night.

The routine described of "pedal, eat, sleep" is a call to any armchair adventurer to get out there and get on their bike!

5.0 out of 5 stars Journey of a lifetime 30 April 2011
By Rappers
Format:Paperback
I love this book. The author creates truly wonderful evocations of the places visited. The people encountered come wholly alive in the pages, whilst the trials, tribulations, excitements and joys of this epic journey are told in masterfull fashion. The cycle ride of these two individuals, no longer in the first flush of youth, is nothing short of remarkable and an inspiration to all.
