Australia has a good pedigree for crime thrillers and this early appearance as leading man by the much lamented Heath Ledger does not disappoint. He is in no way overshadowed by Aussie movie regular Bryan Brown who is in full scenery-chewing mode as a loving family man cum murderous gangster. Ledger plays a young layabout, charming but not the sharpest knife in the box, whom Brown chooses to deliver $10,000 to an address the other side of town, which sum Ledger promptly loses. The plot, which I will not give away, hinges upon Brown's attempts to reclaim his missing money, and Ledger's efforts to raise an equivalent amount before Brown finds him and blows him away. There is not just edge-of-seat excitement a-plenty, but some glorious laugh-out-loud comedy as well. Some of the plotting relies a little too heavily on coincidence, and it's a pity the film has not been released in 16:9 ratio; you'll have to put up with 4:3, but I heartily recommend it all the same.
