Antipodes Noah 14 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
[An all-encompassing review of mine, covering most of Durrell's opus]

Gerald Durrell is my hero, whenever wildlife preservation and appreciation are concerned. And then, as a writer, he has always delighted me with his amusing and entertaining books -- something I cannot say for his brother Lawrence, who authored much more intense work (cf. for example his famous The Alexandria Quartet), with his at times depressing explorations of subject-object relations in modern love.

Moreover, even when Gerald's autobiographical work was rendered into TV serials (e.g., My Family And Other Animals [DVD]), the results were pleasant and fascinating. So, this book is just one more example of great entertaining skills in narration, demonstrating a real talent for presenting strong conservation issues in a humorous and captivating way. The author describes his travels across the world to save creatures from extinction while increasing awareness of the rare and exotic animals at his Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust (now justly called the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust) -- his Noah-like experiences are both thought provoking and highly entertaining.
