Come on - no one writes review on Earl Hooker`s TWO BUGS AND A ROACH..? O`K- how should i put it- "a must have" or "magic " or just simply" EARL HOOKER`S BEST"... Whatever, this is an amazing team playing with a magician and his guitar is plugged somewhwere between haven and earth. Playing slide (ANNA LEE ,SWEET BLACK ANGEL)wah wah slide (WAH WAH BLUES,EARL HOOKER`S BLUES) or straight guitar - he is amazing.His singing is a right match for a guitar , and he fares much better than Big Voice Odom that guests on one track. There were no people like Earl Hooker so it`s better if YOU GET TO KNOW HIM SOONER OR LATER and this CD is a good place to start.

So - 9 years later - I must agree with the previous reviewer: If you dig the blues, you can't do without the Earl.
One rainy night around 1972, I heard an instrumental shuffle on the radio - and my life changed ! Earl Hookers playing on this tune (I believe track 6 on the CD) together with an impeccably tight backing is simply divine and will forever be one of my choices for the 'top ten' of all times. His recording career spanned 20 years, and a lot of his output is really not very good - but at his best, he is untouchable.

A superb guitar player shows-off his stuff

Earl Hooker's great guitar playing shines through on this recording. The "Bug" is Earl's reference to his bout with TB, which almost killed him.
Earl's an incredibly versatile player and this recording highlights the spectrum of his playing. In a 1970's interview, BB King listed Earl Hooker as one his favorite players, and offered the following analogy - "If Earl Hooker was a truck driver, he'd be able to back his rig into any space, no matter how tight..."
By the way... when Jimi Hendrix went to Chicago early in his career he played back-up for Earl & learned alot about how to use a wah-wah.... Listen closely and you'll hear Earl tearing off several riffs that later became parts of Jimi's sound.

hidden legend waiting to be discovered

Earl Hooker is a master of the wah pedal and slide. Noone has found a way to get a sound like his in all the years I've been listening to the blues. This album is a must have for any blues collector.

This recording is a classic for all blues fans and guitarists alike. Earl plays slide guitar with a wah pedal to give his music a unique sound that NOBODY has duplicated. If you had to choose from the ten best blues albums, this one should definately be on that list.
