Gritty But Great! 11 Jan 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
If you liked Roddy Doyle's "The Woman Who Walked Into Doors" make sure you add Two Birds, One Stoned to your reading list. Neville Thompson portrays each character with straightforward matter-of-factness. He doesn't make excuses or beg for your pity. He tells the story of two women intricately bound to one another yet vastly different, though they do share two things- addiction and Johnser Kiely. Tara is a promiscuous hairdresser junkie and Jackie is an alcoholic who tries to hide her drinking from everyone, including herself. Sometimes explicit with a few very disturbing passages, the novel explores the things that can make us fall down and then get back up again with honesty and realism. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Being from Ballyfermot, Dublin myself, I would consider this book to be the best I've read yet. It gives outsiders a look in on real life in Ballyfermot. The crime, the drugs, the craic. It's also really educational for those who didn't have such a background and are interested in learning. Excellent book, would highly recommend it to anyone.

I found this book, a bit more harrowing than the first, it certainly doesn't glamorise drug or alcolhol dependency. If you have got someone young (even older) in your family who thinks drugs are cool, get them to read this book. The great thing about the author of this book, is that you actually get to like and understand a character from the previous book (the junkie hairdresser), which you have disliked immensely. It provided an insight into the characters and why they behaved the way they did in the orginal book. Great reading, you'll stay up all night reading this book to the end.
