Amazon.co.uk Review

Now firmly established as one of America’s favourite comedy series, it’s tricky not to fall for the charms of Two And A Half Men, as it confidently hits its fifth season. At heart, it’s the story of two brothers. On one hand, there’s Jon Cryer’s Alan, who it’s fair to say is the calmer and more sensible of the two. Then there’s Charlie Sheen as, naturally, Charlie, who doesn’t have that many cares in his life, and is a natural born womaniser.

Season five of Two And A Half Men includes the 100th episode of the show, but there are many other highlights too. Season five includes Alan persuading Charlie that the women they date need to be more respectable, Charlie trying to entertain a four-year old, Alan’s attempts to steal Charlie’s girlfriend and then Charlie also seeking relationship advice.

It’s a fairly conventional mix of plotlines, granted, but Two And A Half Men mines many laughs from them. It helps that Sheen and Cryer are a really good double act, and aided by a supporting cast that includes Angus T Jones and Conchata Ferrell (along with a few surprise guest appearances), the show is hard to resist. Five seasons on, its popularity and quality shows little sign of dropping, and it’s a comedy you can consistently rely on to generate chuckles. --Jon Foster

Product Description

Please note this is a region 2 DVD and will require a region 2 or region free DVD player in order to play.

Charlie Harper (Charlie Sheen) is a well-to-do bachelor with a house on the beach, a Jaguar in front of the house and an easy way with women. His casual Malibu lifestyle is interrupted when his tightly wound brother, Alan (Jon Cryer) who's facing a divorce, and Alan's son Jake (Angus T. Jones) come to stay with him. Together, these two and a half men confront the challenges of growing up. Complicating matters are the brothers' self-obsessed, controlling mother, Evelyn (Holland Taylor), Alan's estranged wife Judith (Marin Hinkle) and Charlie's crazy neighbour Rose (Melanie Lynskey) who wants to be a part of his life and is willing to do anything to be around. Sorry, Charlie. It looks like paradise lost.

I've enjoyed this series for several years. The humour remains fresh and the interplay with an older step nephew (Jake)/uncle (Charlie Sheen) is really entertaining. I watch an episode when the rest of the telly is repeats or to cheer myself up on a winter's night. I'd recommend this DVD and the earlier series.

As a fan of this series, I have always worried that the basic premise of this series would outlast its welcome, with characters becoming narow parodies of themselves. It could easily happen with Alan's neurosis, Charlie's womanising and self gratification as well as Jakes slightly annoying stupidity. In fact season five succesfully overcomes this challenge by revisting the shows core comedic values and throwing in some subtle reinvention.

The main example of this is the changing relationship between Jake and Alan. Jake has entered his moody teenager phase and while this is well handled so as not to irritate, it does serve to freshen up the material and also help create new situations for the comedy. It also changes Alan as a character, especially as he starts to seek approval from Charlie as his relationship with Jake changes, this produces classic episodes in "kinda like necrophilia" and "the leather gear is in the guest room". Another bonus is that some of the irritating features of the fourth series such as Charlie's tiredness and getting old are lost in favour of more subtle crafted comedy in which Charlie's shortfalls are handled with a really funny episode in "shoes, hats and pickle jar lids".

As ever there are some good guest appearances with this season featuring, Jenny McCarthy, Christina Moore, and Richard Kind. If you are a fan of the earlier seasons especially 2 and 3, you will be a fan of this series.

Despite a couple of negative reviews here focussing on issues of political correctness related to character development (wouldn't you be bitter and mysogynistic if you were Alan?) and repetition of themes (some people don't change much with time in the real world, but I can see changes in Charlie in this series as he begins to realise that maybe he wants to settle down), this remains a great series. Why watch it if you're easily offended by the basic concept? It's also humour, and in genre fiction, traditional ideas of mainstream fictional character development aren't essential to make us laugh - nor are shows essentially better for focusing on character development (try 'Mad Men', guys, now that's conventional in the literary/novelistic style but brilliant anyway).

At the moment Viva is showing lots of episodes from seasons 3 & 4 on an almost daily basis (as of Autumn 2010). I came on board recently, enjoyed the laughs and backtracked to buy seasons 1 & 2 on DVD. This season is very funny too, but the DVD menus now have simple episode numbers rather than titles, which makes it harder to remember where you are unless you're watching episodes back to back.

Overall, if you're in this for fun rather than as a compliment to your Samuel Beckett drama paperbacks, you'll love it. Plus the fact is that it's not entirely frivolous, as you really do feel for Alan, a nice guy who has no luck. If you're not watching 'Men', all the cool people will laugh at you and you'll risk ending up like the younger Harper brother.....

I'm starting to agree a little bit with some of the other reviews. Season 5 is not quite as sharp or as funny as previous seasons. Read more

My review
Into the fifth season the formula has gotten old and repetative. Nothing new or the least bit "fresh" is brought into the show. Read more

Two and a half men season 5
This show has developed the characters nicely over the years, in this season the comedy is becoming a little more adult as Jake enters adolesence, overall a good series
