5.0 out of 5 stars Great Sense of Humour 2 Oct 2004
By A Customer
Format:DVD
It seems that the some of the reviewers here seem to know little about camera work or what makes a Great DVD. I read the reviews expecting to be dissapointed when the DVD arrived but it simply blew me away.
Personally I think the angles used are highly effective and match the quirkyness of Steely Dan's music perfectly. You get to see all of the band members up close and the quick pace of the camera work ensures there is never a dull moment unlike some other music DVD's I could mention.
The picture quality is superb, I agree the interview levels are slightly low in comparision to the rest of the material but the interviews themselves are not only very entertaining but hilarious too. Overall an excellent DVD with superb DTS sound quality, pin sharp like the picture quality. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Album of the Year 14 Mar 2000
Format:Audio CD
If I don't buy another CD again this year, I know I've heard the best start to the 21st Century! The music is perfection, and after listening to it for maybe 30 or 40 times, there are still new thrills to tingle the spine, and then bask in the warm glow of knowing the best music today. My stand-out track will have to be Janie Runaway, just as I loved My Rival, I will never tire of hearing the opening beats, and then the langorous, almost lazy intro leading into a story of low-life lust and lechery. My wife doesn't understand me, and the people I work with are bewildered by my enthusiasm, but when you know Steely Dan, you truly know good modern music, and this is the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beat This 16 Sep 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Here Becker & Fagen have produced the benchmark for album-makers of the 21st century to match ... & no doubt the likeliest contenders to do this are themselves on their next outing.
For instant gratification play from track 4 (Janie Runaway) to the end (West of Hollywood), then play the first 3 tracks. Stupendous. If Zappa could have been a subtle lyricist maybe he'd have matched the effect of the ludicrous verse found herein. And with their usual super-sublime melodies, instrumentation and arrangements the Dan have proved they can "Do It Again"... and better.
So put away that "Best of Steely Dan" album now boys & girls - this one's better than "Aja" - now there's a recommendation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Performances, Clumsy Cameras 25 Sep 2003
Format:DVD
I have just returned from seeing Steely Dan in the USA and thought that I would add my two pennies worth about this DVD which I purchased yesterday, to see if the judgement of my fellow reviewer was justified or not!. Well to be frank yes and no, admittedly the camera work at times can be classed as shaky (I wonder whether the camera guys have bad nerves or are just over enthusiastic fans who were roped in to film the show after securing free tickets!).But I must say that I found it quite enjoyable to watch and quite a treat for the real Steely Dan fan, whom I feel will enjoy it whatever the camera work is like. The playing is exceptional in the extreme and I feel that the outlay can be justified on the quality of musicianship alone, even my father who cannot say hes ever listened to them found it enjoyable and asked to borrow a few of the discs for himself. I would say invest the money and judge for yourselves, to me it was worth the cost and a good purchase to add to my collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kinda Gothic (in a funny kind of way) 15 Aug 2002
Format:Audio CD
A stunning return from the masters of razor sharp jazz fusion. I often wonder just how good a Steely Dan album would sound if it were recorded today (amazing as it sounds Can't Buy a Thrill is pushing 30). The answer seems to be that it would sound better than ever. The tight and crisp musicianship is jawdropping. If there was any doubt that finding a replacement for Steve Gadd or "The Skunk" would be a step too far would seem to be dismissed. From the beautiful Almost Gothic to the Witty Cousin Dupree these tracks remind us just how great the Dan really where and still are today. Perhaps there aren't the stand out tracks like Aja and Dirty Work, but Walter and Donald show that they can still produce some of the best and humourous pop around.

Format:Audio CD
Steely Dan (and its two members) have an uncanny knack of creating records that, on first hearing, can sound bland and uninteresting but grow on you quickly until, soon, you are involuntarily humming all the tunes continuously and cannot keep the CD out of the player. Two Against Nature is no exception. The customary sophistication, understatement and lack of cliché are all evident here. The female backing vocals and unobtrusive horns restating and extending the harmony are reminiscent of Kamikiriad. This is punctuated by Becker's guitar licks and solos à la '11 Tracks of Whack' throughout. The tunes vary in feel from the funkiness of Gaslighting Abbie, to the drive of the title track , the cool of Jack of Speed, and the jazziness of Negative Girl. Familiar themes surface in the lyrics i.e. nostalgia, regret, anti-heroism, humour to name but a few. Cousin Dupree is the catchiest track on the album but is matched by gorgeous tunes like Almost Gothic (which ends on an unresolved Gm13 chord reminiscent of a similar device used on Wes Montgomery's West Coast Blues). Overall, this is an exquisite record and all the tunes are more than worthy of the Steely Dan name. I just wish there were more on the CD. Let's hope there will be more Steely Dan originals soon.
