Product Description

Product Description

In Twisting Tales, Clare Le May gives us a collection of gems that sparkle. But these tales are unsafe, taking us from the everyday into the realms of fantasy where they weave a disconcerting magic. They are deceptive - compact and economical, they nevertheless conjure worlds of many layers, in a voice that echoes with poetic resonance.
Unusual things happen: shoes talk, young and old take flight in unexpected ways, the ultimate disguise is possible, but the hunter becomes the hunted. And along the way we meet an eclectic mix of characters, including nursery rhyme figures, an agony uncle and the creator of a universe who wants to jack the whole thing in. The results are dark, with a truth that belies the whimsical facade.
Beautifully crafted, each of these short stories will get under your skin and, tantalisingly, you may not know why. A fascinating first collection, it is the product of a distinctive and powerful imagination. This is a deceptively light read that is no lightweight experience.

Twisting and Turning 23 Sep 2011
By Annie H
Twisting Tales

Clare Le May's Twisting Tales take us on a series of quirky, unexpected and unpredictable adventures. Always imaginative and by turns, humorous, fanciful, event violent, they share a common thread of wanting to escape, to fly the everyday world.

Personal favourites include Aunt Sadie's Shoes, where each pair of footwear, tucked away in a wardrobe, displays and transmits its own individual personality, and the poignant Reflections, where your heart yearns for the lovelorn Maureen.

Le May's inventive tales draw us into the minds of her many and various characters, exploring and revealing fragments of their lives.

I toyed with giving this book 4 stars because it's not long enough. In "Twisting Tales", first-time published author (I get the feeling she's been writing for a *long* time!) Clare Le May has given us eight frankly marvellous short stories set in a reality slightly out of kilter with the world we're supposed to live in - but a reality in which I think we'll all find ourselves reflected. Her stories read like fables, or fairy stories, or tales told to children or by a camp fire. They're short - I think the longest is ten pages - and perfect for an evening's read or even on the train.

Pick this book up if you want something to get you thinking. Le May's stories are deceptively simple, her world one where magic and reality mix effortlessly into a greater truth. They reminded me of a female Borges, or even Bulgakov, in the way they unsettle at the same time as entertain. Her command of language seems effortless, and yet there's not a word out of place.

A modern-day Grimms' Fairytales for grown-ups. Highly recommended.
