Even if not for his tragic death in 1959, it seems impossible that Buddy Holly would ever have taken a Mediterranean beach holiday in the 1980s. But, if he had done, then this is how he would have described it.

Looking back from a quarter-century later, the song is a marvellous sociological record of a particular form of vacation in a particular time and place. But its musical form is a good quarter-century older than its subject matter. Knopfler and Holly had the Fender Stratocaster in common; and although their playing styles did differ markedly, this is a rare case of one master of the instrument respectfully following the methods of his most illustrious predecessor - and to very good effect.

The whole thing is an artistic and emotional triumph: I would almost dare anyone to listen to it and not feel uplifted - or indeed break into a dance. It's rock 'n' roll spanning the decades, the continents, and just about everything else. Download it this instant!
