From Amazon.co.uk

Twister was a mega-million-dollar blockbuster--helmed by a director (Dutchman Jan de Bont) hot off another scorcher hit (Speed)--that flaunted state-of-the-art digital effects and featured a popular leading actress (Helen Hunt) who would win an Academy Award for her next film (As Good As It Gets). But ask anybody who's seen it and they'll tell you who the real star of Twister is: the cow. Not to give anything away, but the cow is one of those inspired little touches (like, say, Bronson Pinchot's career-making cameo in Beverly Hills Cop) that adds a touch of personality to a gigantic Hollywood production. The story is blown out the window after an impressive prologue in which Hunt's character, as a little girl, witnesses her daddy being sucked into a tornado. Basically, Hunt and Bill Paxton are thrill-seeking meteorologists chasing twisters in order to study them (and help warn people of them, of course) with a new technology they've developed. If you thought the Kansas tornado in The Wizard of Oz was every bit as scary as the Wicked Witch of the West, then this may be the movie for you. --Jim Emerson

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent fun film 4 May 2009
Format:Blu-ray
This movie dazzled me when it came out. There is plenty of action, the special effects sequences are incredible, and the acting is very good, Helen Hunt does a great job. It's alot of fun and action. I am from the USA and I own the Blu-ray already available here, which has a Dolby True HD soundtrack. This UK version will have DTS Master Audio, which regardless of what some say, is just a more ruch lossless format and has a higher bitrate. Dolby True HD Blu-rays are usually around 1.5-2.0 mbps, where most DTS Master discs are 4-5 mbps (megabites per second). I am going to sell my copy and order this one. As far as the movie, the Blu-ray quality is very good but the soundtrack is fantastic, the tornados swirl all around your room, whoever did the sound mix for this film did one of the best jobs I've heard yet! Highly recommend this Blu-ray!

Well I'm sure you have all seen this film before.
This is the first time I have seen this, and I must say that on blu-ray I thought it was amazing.
The picture quality was immense and the sound was brill.
My sound system is only a 3.1 but it was amazing
Would highly recommend this blu-ray.
5 out of 5 for picture quality and for sound.

3.0 out of 5 stars "The Thunder of God" 28 Nov 2008
By Trevor Willsmer HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
The film that kicked off the 90s disaster movie revival, Twister is a spectacle, pure and very simple, with just enough plot to propel you to the next big set piece of destruction as ex-stormchaser Bill Paxton finds himself swept up in the thrill of the chase as he tries to get Helen Hunt to sign their divorce papers. Don't look for anything profound - Cary Elwes' villainous better-funded rivals even drive black vans while, after the film goes to enormous lengths to stress how all-powerful the twisters are by throwing oil tankers and even houses at them, the heroes survive by, er, tying themselves to some pipes and holding on very tight. Yet the special effects are suitably apocalyptic while the film has a real sense of speed and motion thanks to some great helicopter and driving work, and even the presence of two of the most irritatingly mannered supporting actors in the business, Philip Seymour Hoffman (in the Jack Black role) and Jeremy Davies, doesn't dampen the dumb fun. And no doubt about it, the cow is definitely the star of the show.

Universal haven't exactly put much effort into the UK DVD. Whereas the European releases have some featurettes, the UK just gets a trailer and a decent widescreen transfer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Twisting the night away 10 Dec 2011
By RR Waller TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Jan de Bont's direction of Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Cary Elwes, Jami Gertz and Philip Seymour Hoffman in this somewhat predictable 1996 film is generally good and the film moves along at a cracking pace. Although I may be deluding myself, I like to think I would have been a storm-chaser had I lived in the mid-west and this film certainly captures the intelligent madness involved and the risks many take to produce Discovery programmes and/or scientific data for future study.

The CGI is stunning and combined with surround-cinema sound on the big screen, will have audiences holding firmly to their armchairs. Inevitably, unless readers have invested a lot of money in a home-cinema system, much of this is lost at home.

A few hours of harmless fun in a predictable but enjoyable and visually exciting film, the ultimate stars of which are the twisters.

A great film got even better when it came out in blu-ray. We have a really good speaker system (B&W) and the sound and picture quality was so much better than the original dvd, we definitely heard some sounds that we've never noticed before on our well-watched dvd version. Well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hi Def storm approaching ! 7 Sep 2012
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
Was a bit nervous about buying such an oldish movie on blu ray, but for the price I paid I thought what the hell, the worse it could be is good quality dvd. Anyway, it arrived and we popped it into the player and cranked up the sound. About a minute in and I was grinning like a cheshire cat. The transfer is almost perfect and the audio is fantastic. It actually felt like we were storm chasing while we watched the movie !

4.0 out of 5 stars Twister chews up the scenery on blu ray! 26 Dec 2008
Format:Blu-ray
Ok, it's not an excellent film but Twister sure is a lot of fun. It's mainly a chase movie, with people either chasing the twisters or being chased by them. Definitely one of my favourite "disaster" films with some wonderful special effects and tension filled moments. It's great to finally see it in HD. The picture transfer is pretty well handled, it isn't the best blu ray I've watched, but for a movie outside of the 2000s it's an impressive effort. Like most HD offerings, anything that's not in daylight is a little grainier. My only big fault is that overall the picture looks a fairly pale, but I think that's due to the way the film was shot.

Now, say what you will about the cow, but the stars of this movie are the twisters themselves, brought to life by Industrial Light & Magic. They're the reason why I shelled out for it a third time. ILM's effects hold up quite well after over ten years. The huge F5 tornado at the film's climax is beautiful in 1080p, still frighteningly real. I found myself watching it over and over in slow-mo to appreciate the awesome detail that was put into the monster. Not all of the twisters are as awe-inspiring though, for instance the first distant touchdown looks more like an oil painting than a photoreal effect.

The sound more than completes the experience though. It's one of the things I've always loved about Twister- a completely over the top, hyper real job done by Skywalker Sound. Lion roars mixed with vicious thunderclaps give the fearsome storms a true menacing presence that's a joy to listen to and I have to say the Dolby TruHD offering of Twister's blu ray release is the best I've ever heard it sound.
