Noisy, brash, explicit - everything you could ever ask from a punk record, 6 Jun 2007
Underground Railroad - a three piece punk outfit from the same Parisian district that brought us Air, but who sound four and a half thousand miles away from the progdance duo. Underground Railway play the kind of rock that used to dominate London's XFM before it was taken over by Capital and force fed Travis and Hard Fi; it's grungy, it's interesting, and shows immense promise.
Messrs Moore, Cobain and Rollins are all over `Twisted Trees' - not that imidation is a new phenomenon, or necessarily a bad thing, and any fans of the aformentioned will probably find lots to love about this record.
Note: Twisted Trees goes beyond energetic. The opener 'Milk and Cookies' is a tremendous slab of teen angst, which goes delightfully awry at some points. 'Sweet' is incredibly reminiscent of Sonic Youth with its screeched choruses and slightly off kilter sonic arrangements, whereas 'Hollywood Whore' doesnt leave much to the imagination - nor is it over-subtle in its condemnation. Its enjoyably thrashy stuff, it has to be said. Other titles should give you an indication of what shakes underground railroads tree; '16 Teenage Mom', 'Headache', 'Saddie', and 'Slouch' all give the indication of truculent indolence (a trait it would appear the band are trying to cultivate). Not that thats any bad thing, and this lot can certainly rock out in a way that doesnt grate; its not really a self-abasing record, rather the bands anger is turned outwards which makes a refreshing change. 'Headache' is a cracking track too, building up from a slow start to become a guitar behemoth, with a breathless vocal delivery thrown in for good measure. Moments of quiet are provided by 'Saddie' which is a maudlin track, not a million miles away from Royal Trux in style. Be warned, its a noisy release, but its definitely a most enjoyable listen.

Underground Railroad - groundbreaking, 2 Jul 2008
Having got my hands on the bands new album on pre-release, I have to say that it looks like a bright future ahead of Underground Railroad. This week NME declared them the "the alt.rock album of 2008" and its easy to see why. Formed five years ago, Underground Railroad paved their road to success in the same Parisian region once inhabited by Air.
Their debut album - "Twisted Tree's" came out last year and really showed vast reserves of potential ready to be tapped. The bands influences - some of which include Sonic Youth, Velvet Underground and Nirvana are obvious throughout their first album and yet again in their second album entitled "Sticks and Stones" (Released 29th September 2008 I believe), there is a reminiscent sound to the bands heroes.
However, they have done some fantastic development their own brand of post-punk music. Underground Railroad have really carved out a distinct edge to their music - especially in tracks 'Sticks and Stones' and 'Kill', that are full of energy and fury mixed with a melodic buzz. Equally, other tracks on the album such as '25', 'Stuff in Your Pocket' and 'Six Pieds Sous Terre' are beautifully rhythmic and almost hypnotic. And that's just their CD!
If you head to a live gig then your definitely in for a treat - unafraid of trying their new material and constantly providing captivating twists and turns in their diversity of tracks, Underground Railroad are truly one band not to be missed!
