Ever since reading Tanith Lee's Red As Blood, or Tales from the Sisters Grimmer, I've always been fascinated by the re-telling of traditional fairy tales from a different perspective. That's why I was so excited to see an anthology on the word Twisted, but my excitement was short-lived. The stories contained within this anthology are hit or miss, mostly miss. Some of the stories are satisfying, like the dysfunctional retelling of the Three Little Kittens, or the steam punk version of Little Red Riding Hood, while others start with what seems like a good premise, but end rather abruptly, leaving the reader scratching their head and wondering where the rest of the story is.
There is a repetition of story ideas, which was distracting. I feel the editor should have held out for more versatility, using one Snow White Story, one Red Riding Hood story, one Hansel and Gretel story, etc., instead of using multiple stories surrounding the same themes. She should also have refrained from using the anthology as a showcase for her own pieces, which, for the most part, were the downfall of this compilation.
The formatting was also a problem. Having read this on the Kindle, I found myself moving to the next page only to find nothing but gray boxes on the page, or gray boxes and a sentence. In some instance the anthology title appeared on a page in a larger font for now good explainable reason.
If you are interested in reading this, I would hold out for a used copy at a discounted price.
