The Ambient Fountainhead 12 Aug. 2012
By Tome Raider - Published on
Format: Audio CD
I discovered this disc around the time the television show with the same name was airing in the early 90's. I watched the show a few times, and it really didn't do much for me. (I have since watched it again and I enjoyed it more.) But I loved the opening music and so I was compelled to buy this soundtrack. I think it is one of the best soundtracks of all time, and I have given dozens of copies as gifts over the years and always received very positive feedback.

This is actually the album which got me interested in ambient music. The ultra-saturated mood which is created here, with the flowing sense of time passing in a warmly lugubrious and epic way....this is music to which one can introspect and reflect. In fact, that introspection is almost inevitable. This music seizes you and captivates in a singular way; it's not really open to interpretation just as Gregorian Chant is not open to interpretation. A certain mood is mandated. Somehow Angelo Badalamenti reminds us of the fact that our presence here (on Earth) is couched in magical intrigue. Something seems familiar when I listen to this, like a recollection from a past life is just about to break the surface of my awareness. This album casts a shadow. It's almost scary.

Yes, I know this sounds New Age over-the-top, but listen to this music and see if you disagree! I don't think you will.

Intrigue. That's the mood which is conveyed. You get the sense from this that things are going on beneath the surface--beneath the surface of your life, your existence; things will be you, as the listener, not just on some television show for which this was written. In fact, if it were not for this music I suspect the television show would have been much flatter, more pedestrian, perhaps even more accessible. This music kicks it up several notches into mystical and rarified realms. (I'm a big fan of David Lynch, but I bet even he would be the first to agree.) The intrigue here is Cosmic in origin: there is a design which is under the surface of things. This music doesn't reflect random fate, it conveys sentient and volitional authority. And we're a little concerned, because we don't know if these forces are malevolent or benevolent; we just sense they have control of our destiny, or at least strong influence.

And so, even though this music is slow and heavy, there is a certain excitement which is generated. You are peering through "a door of perception" when this is playing, and who knows what you'll see. I've been listening to this for 20 years now, and it still holds up as an ambient listen entirely independent of the television show, and as a reminder of those deeper intrigues in my own life which I don't often notice.

Being a big fan of Angelo Badalamenti, I was not disappointed the first time I heard this music and I needed to replace a lost CD. Amazon came through with a great price. The music has a haunting kind of mellowness and can take you to places that are only reachable in your mind. There is no other vocalist than Julee Cruise that can compliment the musical arrangements the way she does. The jazzy feel on some tracks are done to perfection and once again the musical artistry is exceptional.

Twin Peaks was a wonderfully strange exposition of a sad ending to a beloved young life. This soundtrack takes the listener on an eerie quest for answers via a curious beginning, an exhilarating engagement and an ending of bittersweet release. It generates a physical response along with the emotional . Some melodies flit about in the shadows of memory for days.
Haunting music created by the Angelo Badalamenti / David Lynch collaboration 29 Dec. 2013

David Lynch and movie score composer Angelo Badalamenti had a really good thing going. Wonder why it isn't happening any more? I treasure these magnificently eerie and dramatic tracks.

then it did on originally watching it when it first aired. Being able to view several episodes at a time kept the details fresh in my mind.
