5.0 out of 5 stars All Time Classic 7 April 2009
Format:VHS Tape
Its about time this was digitally whatsitsnamed and put onto DVD or Blu-Ray. This film is in my top 5 films, a real tense thriller, right to the end, when you know whats going to happen, but you want it to end so so differently. The use of the split screen was brilliant, watching both sides as they posture and try to out manouvre each other in the same picture. Burt Lancaster at his very best, his threat to use the missile is pure edge of the seat stuff. Whenever it comes out, just buy it, you'll not regret it.

This tense post Vietnam thriller stars Burt Lancaster as a dissaffected Vietnam vet General Lawrence Dell. Breaking free from prison with a motley crew of prisoners, Dell and his accomplices take over a US Titan missile site; Silo 3.
Dell has been framed for trying to tell the truth about some of the actions of the US in Vietnam and the policy of acceptable deaths of US military.
Lawrence Dell has worked on the missile systems so overriding the inhibitors and cut-offs of the missiles is accomplished with just a few hair raising moments.
Dell is pitted against General Martin MacKensie (Richard Widmark) who is determined to retake Silo 3 and make sure that Lawrence Dell does not reveal the military involvement in covert Vietnam operations. Altnam's use of split screen to show the view of both protagonists is novel. Some people have railed against his use of split screen, I think it heightens the tension.
Dell thinks that the military has been keeping information of the Vietnam operations from the President and this proves to be the case.
Dell forces the President to come to Silo 3 to complete the negotiations and release information to the public about these covert operations.
Meanwhile MacKensie is intent on killing Dell and company before allowing him to launch his missiles. To this end he sends in an undercover team to place a suitcase sized atomic weapon inside the silo.
The team accidentally trip an alarm in Silo 3 and Dell starts the launch programme, only stopping when the President agrees to come to negotiate. In a last ditch attempt to take out Dell and the rest of the team, MacKensie arranges a crack hit squad to cover the Silo for the meeting of Dell and the President. I will not spoil the surprise ending for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is my search in vain ? 28 Oct 2006
Format:VHS Tape
Knowing political analogy, incisive script, great acting , but primarily a gripping edge of your seat drama from one of the great movie directors.

Why is it that movie companies seem eager to release so many mediocre movies on to DVD yet this masterpiece remains unavailable.

Please , please release on DVD !

5.0 out of 5 stars 35 years to get a dvd release!!! 30 Dec 2012
By Mrgvase
This is another Betemax lost gem, which has taken too many years for a proper showing, the movie was crying out for a widescreen version for years, due to the splitscreen use of the picture,ie 3 or 4 pictures on your tv all at once, showing different parts of the film in one go.The region 1 dvd on offer here is just fantastic, restored to 100% of the original, top picture and sound, cannot say anything about the blu-ray version, but if all dvd`s had this work done on them, then you would be hard to find better. As for the movie, will I for one wish they had kept to Walter Wager`s story more,of three man out for a big ransom payoff,as it is,too much is given over to the US problems of fighting a war in the 1960`s,could be the reason it bombed at the box office in 1977,that said it`s still a well made thriller, and worth a good sunday afternoon`s viewing if you have never seen it.I also think the noval`s title was better,VIPER THREE,where did TWILIGHTS LAST GLEAMING come from?.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lancaster and Aldrich misfire! 17 Oct 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This film failed to find a audience on it's release, I got a good idea why ! It has good credentials Lancaster, Aldrich, a fine supporting cast. But a rather ludicrous plot line. ok it's only a action movie and some action movies you can forgive a few ludicrous plot turns. 3 convicts take over a nuclear silo and can start World War 3.......hmmm ok whatever ! I can live with that. But.............SPOILER ALERT..........The premise that America went into Vietnam so the Russians would be impressed by there capality to lose thousands of men in a unwinable war just to show them they are not afraid to sacrifice is utter drival and ludicrous. It spoils any dramatic plot twists like expendable Presidents..........yeah right!! on that twist as well !!

If the plot line was changed to say. Vietnam was fought to make politically connected rich American arms dealers even richer, That i could have lived with. As apparently American arms also found there way to the Viet cong ! Not as good as the hour long documentary thinks it is. But still a good documentary never the less. I gave it 3 stars as there is certain satisfaction in seeing old pros like Lancaster, Widmark et all doing there stuff. Another small gripe. Lancasters wardrobe, If he was taking over a nuclear silo dressed as a Air force officer . Why did said officer turn up looking like a painter and decorater !!

Bought this film some time ago but had problems playing it on my all regions player and supplier refused to accept return of product. Bought this version from a different supplier and have had no problems with it. It's a great movie with an excellent cast would recommend both the movie and the supplier.
