Book Description

1 Jan 2004 Drake Sisters Novels
Kate Drake, a well-travelled bestselling novelist, is one of seven sisters. Seven very special sisters who happen to be witches. When she returns to the small coastal town in northern California where she grew up right before Christmas to attend her sister's wedding, she decides to settle there. She intends to open a book store in a charming, but run-down and spooky historic house. While Kate is clearing out the basement an earthquake occurs, knocking down part of the wall and revealing a burial crypt. Kate turns to the handsome carpenter who is helping her renovate the house. But Kate begins to sense that neither the carpenter nor the law nor any other worldly power can help her arrest the evil that was released from the crypt. She will have to summon all of her supernatural power - and that of her six sisters - to destroy the evil that is casting a dark shadow over her hometown.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Drake Sisters - Kate's story 2 Jan 2010
By Ladybubbles VINE VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I became a fan of Christine Feehan through her Dark series, which I love and of course brought this new book, which continued the story she started in the anthology "Lover Beware", about seven witch sisters. This story is SO different from her Carpathian series that I would classify this story as a romantic suspense - I had creepy horror music playing through my head during half of the story that gave me the chills!
Kate, the second oldest Drake sister, is a best-selling author whose gift is to weave stories. She sees herself as plain compared to her more beautiful and gifted sisters and the one man she is attracted to is way out of her league. What Kate doesn't realise is that the object of her affection, Matt, has always been attracted to her and considered her out of his league also.
On her return to Sea Haven, Kate decides to settle and buys a local property to fix up and open as a bookstore. Matt has also returned to Sea Haven and is helping with the family business. When Kate mentions her property, Matt offers to help fix it up. However, when an earthquake causes a malevolent spirit to be released from the foundations of Kate's new purchase, Kate and her sisters must use their magical abilities to stop and contain it and Matt realises that Kate is too important to him to leave unprotected...
I found this second book in the series "The Twilight Before Christmas" truly enjoyable. Both the heroine and hero were believable and fun to read about. The added backlines about the secondary characters and the rest of the Drake sisters added to the whole story.
The storyline was good; the suspense and supernatural elements were well played out to give you chills and the history of Christmas was interesting in the context of the story.

3.0 out of 5 stars the twilight before christmas - my review 9 July 2004
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
kate drake one of seven sisters gifted with the art of witchcraft, returns home to sea haven. she is a succesful novelist and decides to open a bookstore, using the old but historic run-down mill.
former u.s army ranger matt granite, who is now working in the familys contracting business decides to help out with the renevations. he is in love with kate, she is also in love with him.
when an earthquake cracks the mill's foundations, it reveals a crypt, that kate senses holds a centuries old evil. now it is unleashed.
it's coming after kate and matt vows to guard her from dusk until dawn.
with her sister's help kate knows she will have to summon all of her powers to battle the darkness that awaits them......
this is the second novel i have read by christine feehan, and although this book wasn't one of her best it was readable.
i think what lets this book down,is the central charactor of kate, for a powerful witch she was very timid and quite annoying at times.
i enjoyed reading this book, but i feel that it wasn't quite believable at times. these powerful women - witches, are too readily accepted by the towns folk and no-one really questions all that they do. it's also not a very powerful book, the storyline would normally work well, but this is too much like easy reading.
it's a nice little story and i look forward to the future storys of these women.

1.0 out of 5 stars Forgettable 4 Nov 2003
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Having been a keen fan of Christine Feehan all I can say is "WORDS FAIL ME"
The characters are forgettable, the plot mediocre and I actually found myself skipping pages hoping the nail bitting story she normally delivers would miraculously appear!!
I have waited for months in suspence for this book.WHAT A LET DOWN.
I can honestly say I wouldn't bother buying the sequel.
I wouldn't go as far as plagiarism, but having read James Herbert "THE FOG" and Nora Roberts stories about the sisters with supernatural powers this is a mis-match of similar plot and characters.
Matt obviously needs therapy if he has to marry in between waiting for Kate his only true love, "EXCUSE ME ARE WE REAL?"
My final comment must be "I WAS ROBBED!"

4.0 out of 5 stars The Twilight before Christmas 15 Nov 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I have been an avid reader of Chrstine Feehan for years, mostly reading the Carpathian series of books. I decided to try some others. I didnt like the Leopard books and chose to try the Drake Sisters. I thoroughly enjoyed this book , it was what I would call an easy read. I have since bought others in the series and have enjoyed all of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Twilight before christmas 16 Oct 2010
By Midge
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Recently purchased this book as part of the Drake Sister series I had been enjoying. The sale description was perfect, the book was received in the time stated and well packaged. Ten out of ten for the seller.
The book is excellent as is the whole series. If anyone out there has the first book in the series ( Magic in the Wind) at a reasonable price, I would appreciate the heads up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Magical read 4 April 2009
By stripeyunited VINE VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
For some reason I cannot get into Christine Feehan's Carpathians, but the Drake Sisters drew me in from the start. The number seven has always been associated with special abilities, even in our own world, so these seven magical sisters isn't that much of a stretch.

Kate is a writer, gifted with the magical ability to calm. She returns to her hometown of Sea Haven and is drawn to purchase an old mill, which has a dark secret in the basement.
Matt appears to be her polar opposite, an ex-US Army Ranger who has returned to the family building business which enables him to offer Kate help in restoring the mill. And he's always been drawn to Kate.

As well as following the story of Kate and Matt's developing relationship, what's really nice here is not only do you get an extended visit with the sisters (compared to the introductory Drake Sisters story which is novella-length) to get to know them better, to see how draining their gifts are; and a fuller view of their protector Jonas who has a sparky relationship with all the sisters, but particularly Hannah, but also there's the dark brooding Jackson (can't wait to read the stories featuring the sisters and these guys). And of course at novel length, there's more time and space to build up the tension and danger in the story.

There's plenty of brooding atmosphere, and the fog not only comes alive in the story, it's alive on the page too. If the reason for the danger that threatens Kate and Sea Haven is perhaps a little on the thin side, I can forgive it for the quality of the writing, and the honesty with which Kate and Matt address their feelings. There are no silly mis-understandings or artificial conflicts here to try your patience with the romance.
