Product Description

Computer whiz-kid Peter Keithly, asked to transfer a betting formula onto computer tape, dies shortly afterwards. An old friend of his, Jonathan Perry, finds himself in possession of the tapes, and also discovers that there are greedy, desperate men who will do anything to get their hands on the lucrative software. The evil, bull-faced Angelo goes too far and ends up in jail. Fourteen years later he's free, and very keen not only to get hold of the tapes, but also Jonathan Perry.

I have had a couple of Dick Francis books sitting on the shelf gathering dust, and not being a horse racing fan, have never given it a go. But I am glad I did. Certainly this book was about relationships, frienship, treachery, revenge, and very little to do with racing. Written in the 80's some of the technical side is rather dated, but that's an observation.
Without spoiling any of the story, a physics teacher is given a computer disc with a complicated mathematical formula that has the ability to predict accurately the outcome of races. However some very unpleasant men want the disc, and they are not afraid to be very persuasive. The teachers younger brother is the horse racing fan and this story affect both their lives over a 20 year period.
If you like a good thriller, with a very plausible plot this is a great book

Interesting contrast 14 Mar 2002

Format:Paperback
This book is a great study in the differences between the two brothers. After fourteen years, the bad guy has also aged and changed, making this book an insight into age and character, in a way that Dick Francis doesn't normally get to explore. I would definately recommend that you read the companion book first, as it will help greatly in your enjoyment.
In standard Francis fashion, the good guy is gritty, determined and stubborn, and the bad guy gets his come-uppance, although it isn't quite what you would expect.
