Book Description

21 Oct 1999
An autobiography of Stuart Turner, one of the leading motorsport figures of the last 40 years. He claims to have had two major pieces of luck - he joined the British Motor Corporation as Competitions Manager when the Mini Cooper was coming on strong and then moved to Ford just as the Escort was starting to shine. He includes anecdotes about many of the top race and rally drivers, including several World Champions, whom he knows personally.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and insightful. 7 Feb 2000
The autobiography of the man who virtually invented modern rally co-driving, managed the works BMC team (Big Healeys, Mini Coopers and more), moved to Ford and was responsible for the myriad victories of the rallying Escorts, the birth of the RS200 and Sierra RS500, the Escort Cosworth... and much more. It's all here. Turner is one of the funniest and most perceptive thinkers on motorsports and his autobiography is quite simply a superb read. Compulsory reading for anyone interested in rallying, the British car industry, the structure of motorsport, or just a very funny book written by someone who's had a full and fascinating life and is a born raconteur. This book really is laugh-out-loud funny, as well as covering a lot of history. I read it in one sitting, and look forward to doing so again many times in future. Even includes a sample of the legendary rude correspondence between Turner and Jackie Stewart that's almost worth the cover price alone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Straight From The Horse's Mouth... 27 July 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Extremely interesting as I was a huge motor sport fan from the early 1970's onwards, particularly the 'golden' age of '70's rallying. Mr. Turner gives fascinating insights from behind the scenes throughout this era and beyond. Obviously, as Mr. Ford Motor Sport he is highly qualified to do this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Always lucky 1 Feb 2000

A very humourous look at Stuart Turners life! A great read and well worth buying, but then I am slightly biased, being his younger daughter.

4.0 out of 5 stars At last! 29 Dec 2000
By Derek Hall - Published on
It was a pleasure to reminisce about the glorious days when Ford Motor Sport ruled world rallying. I was heavily involved in club rallying during the 70's and mid 80's, and to get an insight into the workings of the Company at that time proved enjoyable and filled in the gaps of what 'Joe public' knew of FoMoCo. It was also a pleasure to read about the early days of rallying, and compare with the current trends and how vastly different World championship rallies are nowadays. A great read from start to finish.
4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Autobiography 19 May 2013

I have only just opened this book. Find it very readable, amusing and entertaining! What else could you ask for in a book about a favourite hobby? Stuart Turner and Marcus Chambers tell it like it was competing in motorsport during the 60s and 70s
4.0 out of 5 stars A great look at rally history 27 Jun 2001

A very detailed look at Stuart's life. Lots of insight about how rally teams were run in the good old days. If you're a rally fan, you'll enjoy his life story.
