1929 to 1954 - twenty-five years and twenty stories, fewer than one a year and think of the changes which occured during those years.
Greene was a good short story writer and this collection is full of his best examples - some very short, others about fifteen pages. "The Destructors" is an excellent, if very unusual story centred on one boy; "The Fallen Idol", the changing view of a young boy; "The Blue Film" a past returns to haunt.

This is a really varied group of stories and, because they are short, quick to read to gain an impression of this writer better known as a novelist.

Written between 1929 and 1954 this is a fairly mixed bag of Graham Greene's stories. Most of them are fairly short and they all provide a snapshot of a particular moment - sometimes comic, sometimes tragic, sometimes macabre, but always curious. The longest story "The Basement Room" also appears as "The Fallen Idol" published with "The Third Man".

To be honest it is a mixed bag and few of the stories really engaged or moved me. I find Greene's novels much more satisfying. If you are a Greene fan then this is probably essential reading for you; but if you are looking for a taste of Greene, read some of his novels; and if you are looking for a really good collection of short stories, look elsewhere. If Greene wasn't the author, this collection would have been forgotton decades ago.

I would be more capable of reviewing this book if I had read it: it`s part of a Christmas gift and will not be opened until then. However, I`m pleased with it. Thank you!
