Two burned out schoolteachers, two young boys, two bicycles. One year-long adventure on two wheels.

The Vogel family, including 8-year-old twins, ditched it all in order to head out on bicycles to discover their country. As they cycled 9300 miles throughout the USA and Mexico, Mother Nature showed them her best and worst, as did their fellow human beings. Around each corner in the road, they encountered yet another Road Angel ready to add magic to their journey.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spirit of Adventure 1 Feb 2012
By JB
Format:Kindle Edition
`Yet another gruelling day in paradise,' writes Nancy Vogel as she and her family cycle from Oregon into California after completing a thousand miles of adventure across four states - and the journey is still only just beginning. There are a lot of miles to pack into one book, but what stands out are the lovely moments: when Nancy puts one of the kids into the trailer on the back of the bike, when someone in Portland lets the family camp in their back garden, the victorious feeling when the kids finally stop asking when they can go home. There's also some good advice if you're thinking of doing something like this: it shows well how you have to get through the tough learning curve of getting familiar with the routine, how far you can go per day and how many breaks and how much food you'll need, and then you can begin to enjoy it.
I would have liked to know more early on about how they chose the the route, when to do it and whether the kids were involved in the decision. I would have liked scenes to be fleshed out more; I'd have liked more details in places.
But all in all, this is a fun read and shows the spirit of adventure is alive and well in the Vogel family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sincerely couldn't put it down 17 Jan 2012
By M. Alexander - Published on Amazon.com

I "met" the author on a writers forum some time ago. (She doesn't know me from Adam. I just responded to a post once.) I thought her trip sounded fascinating, so I began reading her blog. And I was impressed. I was impressed with what they accomplished and with their "live your dream" philosophy.

This morning I decided to take the plunge and buy the book. I read it every chance I got through the day and finally set everything else aside to finish it. It hooked me from the first chapter and never let go. When I wasn't reading today, I was daydreaming about my own biking adventure -- where I'd go, what I'd see, how I'd survive.

I don't even own a bike. Or like to ride. But this book enthralled me. I really, really hope they're writing a sequel about their trip through South America!

5.0 out of 5 stars Warning: Creates wanderlust 2 Jan 2012
By Maria Elmvang - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was first introduced to the Vogel family when I found their blog where Nancy chronicled their two-and-a-half-year bike ride from Alaska to Argentina. I was completely blown away by their adventures, so when I discovered she was writing a book about their earlier one-year bike ride around the US and Mexico, I knew I had to read it.

And it didn't let me down. The magic that made me fall in love with the blog is in the book as well, and I finished it in one day. It really gets my wanderlust boiling even if I know I could never take a year out of my calendar the way they did, but reading about their experiences, all the "Angels of the Road" they met... it's the kind of thing that restores my faith in humanity and I loved living vicariously through them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly honest 18 Jan 2012
By E. Cave - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is not a book for those who don't dream.

This is, however, a book for everyone else.

Heartwarming and real, it tells the story of the Vogel's trip throughout the US and Mexico. Nancy is refreshingly honest, and doesn't paint a picture of idyllic touring conditions... and sometimes doesn't even retell conversations and actions of her family in the most flattering light.

But, it is that intrinsic quality of a gutsy and honest memoir, that shapes the themes of this book and shares how a family unit family unit grows, learns and listens to each other. In a day and age where children spend their free time isolated with gaming systems and parents are exhausted and distracted by work life, this book will inspire you to take the time and make the leap and do something different for your family, and work harder to make your dreams a reality.

In my many years of traveling I’ve found adventure is, many times, only one step away from disaster. It springs from the unknown – from having no idea how we will meet our basic needs. It is stressful, but the kind of stress I can look back upon and say, “What an unexpected turn of events!” It’s those days that make the most memorable experiences, "e;
