Product Description

Product Description

The Chilean Pablo Neruda (1904-1973) was probably the greatest and certainly the most prolific of twentieth-century Latin American poets. He brought out his first collection at the age of seventeen, and quickly developed an assured and distinctive poetic voice. His third book, Veinte poemas de amor y una cancion desesperada - 'twenty love poems and a song of despair' - was published in 1924 and attracted international acclaim. It remains one of the most celebrated and admired books of erotic poetry published in the last hundred years, with over a million copies sold worldwide. Neruda was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1971.

About the Author

Born Neftal-Ricardo Reyes Basoalto in southern Chile in 1904, Pablo Neruda led a life charged with poetic and political activity. His first book, Crepusculario ('Twilight') was published in 1923. The following year, he published Veinte poemas de amor y una cancion desesperada ('Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair'), which turned him into a celebrity. In 1927 he began his long career as a diplomat, serving as Chilean consul in numerous places including Burma, Buenos Aires, Madrid, Mexico and France. He was elected to the Chilean Senate in 1943 but later expelled for being a Communist. In 1952 the government withdrew the order to arrest leftist writers and political figures, and Neruda returned to Chile. For the next twenty-one years, he continued a career that integrated private and public concerns and became known as the people's poet. During this time, Neruda received numerous prestigious awards, including the International Peace Prize in 1950, the Lenin Peace Prize and the Stalin Peace Prize in 1953, and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971. He died of leukaemia in Santiago, Chile in 1973. (20040414)

5.0 out of 5 stars A moving and profound selection., 12 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Each of the twenty love poems is a little gem, a tribute to the genius of a man whose work speaks with gut wrenching emotion of the joys and sorrows of love. He merges sky and earth, the subtle nuances of feeling with the rich tapesty of nature and earth's bounty. His descriptive powers and degree of comprehension are on a par or beyond those of any other modern love poet.

4.0 out of 5 stars heartbreaking, 18 Mar 2001
By A Customer
I was introduced to these poems just recently and I found them to be beautiful and heartbreaking. Reading them again brings back beautiful memories I never wish to forget. Each poem reaches inside and it's as if he thinks how you feel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartbreakingly beautiful, 17 Jan 2006

This review is from: Twenty Love Poems (Paperback)
This book is truly wonderful, i have only just discovered Pablo Neruda and was amazed by the beauty of the poems. Twenty love poems is filled with touchingly intimate pieces. Neruda has the power to make the ordinary extraordinary. My particular favourites are 'I remember you as you were' and 'Tonight i can write'. I recommend this collection of poems to anyone.
