Product Description

Product Description

The essential guide to the top twenty greatest books in philosophy for those who have just never quite found the time to read them. In this witty and engaging book, James Garvey offers an introductory account of the must-read books from the whole history of philosophical writing. From Plato to Popper, Descartes to Wittgenstein, the greatest books in philosophy have had a huge impact on the development of contemporary society, politics, economics and culture. This entertaining and intelligent guide introduces the philosophical questions central to these books that are of genuine interest to the general reader and opens up often complex and challenging ideas for wider debate. This is the ideal book for those coming to philosophy for the first time. Garvey introduces the key themes and terms in philosophy before exploring each of the twenty great philosophy books with humour and clarity. The book presupposes no background in philosophy and encourages the reader to actively engage in philosophical thinking. The "Twenty Greatest Philosophy Books" is the essential guide for anyone with an interest in this fascinating subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty, entertaining, informative and thought provoking - excellent introductory text, 21 Nov 2006

(REAL NAME)
As someone with very little prior knowledge of philosophy (a little more than Bill and Ted, but not far off), I found this book an extremely accessible and thought-provoking commentary on the great philosophical works, not to mention an excellent introduction to the field in general.

Garvey places each of the 20 works in question within the context of the author's life and their greater body of work and also discusses the impact of each book both on the field of philosophy and our understanding of society, morality, science, religion (and more) in general. Garvey's humour, clarity and engaging style, combined with the good structure and pace of each chapter, make this a very easy book to dip in and out of. Despite the concise nature of this book, the author effortlessly conveys a great deal of information and plenty of grand ideas and arguments that these philosophical works introduce. While clearly enthusiastic about the genius of those responsible for these works, Garvey always presents objective questions and counter-arguments that encourage the reader not just to sit back in awe, but to actively question the original arguments and logic.

In fact my only criticism of this book is probably one of the book's greatest strengths in that, after every chapter, I invariably wanted to find out even more about the material being discussed and continue the philosophical arguments that had been introduced. As a result (and I'm aware this may act as a warning to some), I should admit that I heard myself quoting Plato's Republic in a bar shortly after reading the first chapter. All those present who knew me were as surprised as I was, not only to hear these words leaving my lips, but also that the quote was actually relevant and reasonably well-informed. High praise indeed.

In summary, I would highly recommend this book as an enjoyable and informative introductory text for anyone from the complete philosophical novices up to about 1st year undergraduate students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good bog-reading material, 29 Jan 2007
My housemate is studying philosophy at Uni and she would often leave books lying around the house. To cut a long story short, I found myself reading this book whilst I was in the bathroom one day. To my surprise, I found the book to be quite easy going and the information certainly sank in more than I expected. I now know the difference between Plato and Aristotle. I especially like the running theme of how each "great philosophy book" attempts to define reality, morals and beauty. Unfortunately, one downside to this book is it means I now understand what my housemate goes on about!!
