Periodically books come out on the "Best 50/100/etc. Albums" theme. Former 'Melody Maker' editor Chris Charlesworth and Omnibus Press combine to offer 25 ALBUMS THAT ROCKED THE WORLD, the latest offering in the field.
Charlesworth enlisted 17 other music writers/journalists to pick 25 albums that "defined their era, pushed the boundaries a bit or...simply sold in such huge quantities that they are impossible to ignore." (That explains why 'Abba Gold' is included).
The choices they came up with probably won't throw anyone for a loop. They include 'Sgt. Pepper's,' 'Born to Run,' 'Rumors,' 'Pet Sounds,' 'Never Mind the Bollocks,' 'Electric Landlady,' 'Layla' and so on. Each entry includes background information on the album and track-by-track commentary. The album's cover art is also featured.
The fun of books like this one is reading the informed commentary by all those 'experts.' Maybe you don't agree with all the picks made by Charlesworth & Co. but, what the heck, it's their book!
25 ALBUMS THAT ROCKED THE WORLD is entertaining and informative; a good book to take to lunch or while away time on a park bench! Recommended.
