Product Description

Political idealism? Financial reward? The thrill of the chase? What drives a person to risk their life by entering the deadly world of high-level espionage? A unique investigation of the most important cases of the twentieth century, this exploration of the world’s most glamorous and dangerous job – including information newly released under the Freedom of Information Act – will keep you enthralled until the last page. Find out the dark secrets of: • Sidney Reilly, considered by many to be the greatest spy of the century and an inspiration for Ian Fleming’s James Bond • The ‘Atom Bomb’ spy Klaus Fuchs, who gave the Russians atomic capability • George Blake, who betrayed over forty British agents, and is still alive in Moscow • The Cambridge Spies, the double agents who did more damage to British intelligence in the twentieth century than any other group Neil Root’s insightful book focuses on the personalities of these enigmatic figures, discusses their motivations and influences, and asks whether they were heroes, traitors or just scapegoats.

I had previously read the author's book on the Ipswich murders and looked forward to reading this one, despite knowing little about the subject matter myself.

This volume has proved an excellent introduction to a selection of spies (made all the more relevant with the recent discovery of Russian spying rings in the US and elsewhere)and I can thoroughly recommend it to anyone who's interest in spying may have been piqued by recent events - or even by the more fantastical Bond and Bourne stories. Well-researched and well-written, if there is a criticism it is that attempting to analyse the motives behind spies such as Mata Hari can only be speculative but the author has done well to look at the backgrounds and personal histories of the spies concerned to develop his theme.

All-in-all an excellent way to approach a variety of spies throughout the last century. Perhaps the publisher can persuade Mr Root to bring us up to date with the latest batch of Russian glamour-spy?

A really great read 7 May 2010
Format:Paperback
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book!!
Very well written and researched, Mr Root brings the characters from the shadowy world of espionage to life.
Exposing motivations and influences of these notorious figures.
Setting them in the background of their times the reader is able to understand their actions more fully.
Having already read Mr Root's previous book, Cold-Blooded Evil, which I enjoyed enormously, I determined to watch out for his next one.
He hasn't disappointed, a writer with a great writing style, I really look forward to his next book!!!

Brilliant Read!! 19 Mar 2010
By Ms. L. A. Chesters - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I really enjoyed this book!!!
Well researched and beautifully crafted, it draws you inside the world of spying.
The grey shadowy figures of the imagination are shown to be 'real' people, who were recruited into the world of espionage for many different reasons.
I had previously read Mr Root's book 'Cold-Blooded Evil: The True Story of the Ipswich Stranglings' which was equally well written; and I decided to look out for his next book. I have not been disappointed, and really look forward to the next one!!!
